Society’s disproportionate and largely superficial obsession with crimes affecting children is fetishization.
 
Sensationalizing any form of “crime” encourages large numbers of false positives and slanderous accusations in the rush to profit from looking like a hero (virtue-signaling), or in the pursuit of outraging the public to increase engagement (clickbaiting). Many “activists” proactively encourage or even directly participate in what they campaign against, because they rely on the problem perpetuating in order to profit off of it, and child abuse is no exception. The louder some politician goes on about how awful child rape is, the more I suspect that they rape children, and 4/5 times I’m right.
 
It is not “better” to abuse a nominal adult than a nominal child. Rape and murder are just as heinous and disgusting regardless of the victim. By harping on about “dere’s nothin’ murr evil dan hurtinz childs” you do nothing but increase the harm to children by making hurting children profitable, and erase the exact same harm to everybody else by making it passé.
