XTC - Summer’s Cauldron, Grass, That’s Really Super Supergirl, 1000 Umbrellas, Another Satellite, Mermaid Smiled and Dear God
From the ninth album by the English (From Swindon, Wiltshire) Rock band, “Skylarking” (1987)
Fun facts:
- The album was produced by the prolific American musician and soundsmith Todd Rundgren, at his Woodstock Sound Studios in Woodstock, New York
- The album contains a notable 60s psychedelic influnece to its sound, mirroring the band’s output as their alter ego The Dukes Of Stratosphear (As whom they recorded two studio albums)
- The album’s title refers to both a type of bird (Skylark) and to a Royal Navy term which means “fooling around”
- The song Dear God is notable for its controversial subject matter, involving the agnostic narrator’s frustration at God, both as a being and as a concept, and how he supposedly lets all the bad things in the world from war to famine unfold without any intervention. It was left off of original copies of the album for for fear of backlash. It would be released as a single instead (though instated in future issues of the album). Sure enough, some controversy did ensue, including a couple of violent incidents such as a bomb threat to a Florida radio station (presumably, it had either played the song or planned on playing it). Nonetheless, it is an emotional and thought-provoking gem in the Pop rock world, and at the time became a hit on college radio in the US, reaching number 70 in the charts
- Guitarist Dave Gregory played Eric Claptop’s legendary psychedelically-painted Gibson SG on “…Supergirl”, named “The Fool” after the Dutch design collective who painted it for him. The guitar was owned by Todd Rungren, who had acquired it through English singer Jackie Lomax (who of course got it through Clapton)

Terry Reid - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) (Sonny & Cher cover), Tinker Taylor, Without Expression, Season Of The Witch (Donovan cover) and Loving Time
From the English (From St Neots, Cambridgeshire) Rock singer/songwriter/guitarist’s debut solo album, “Bang, Bang You’re Terry Reid” (1968)
Fun facts:
- Terry wrote his song “Without Expression” at the age of 14, and it went on to be covered by many notable bands including The Hollies, CSN&Y and REO Speedwagon
- Bill Bonham (Born in Birmingham), the organist on this album, later played with the Progressive rock group Paladin before moving to the U.S. in the mid 1970s, settling in California where he got a side gig as an audio-visual engineer at Disneyland. He passed away in 2015
- Aside from his own career, Terry Reid is also known for having been approached circa 1968 by Jimmy Page with an offer to be the lead singer of The New Yardbirds, soon to become Led Zeppelin. Preferring to keep touring and recording as a solo artist, Terry Reid declined and instead recommended his associate Robert Plant. The rest, as they say, is history!
