Well, I was just banned from a D&D server because in the TTRPG chatting forum I was asking people about their thoughts on D&D 1e’s race/species base class level caps.

That sucks. At least you were given a reason for being kicked from a discord server, even if the reason was hardly justified.

Somehow it was too heavy for the topic. I knew I felt like walking on egg shells at times, but that’s just ridiculous.

I wonder how broken it can get if we house ruled that wild shape druids could self buff?

I mean, the moon druid is considered the strongest subclass for them by far, so self-buffing post-transformation might turn them up to 11.

I’ll ask here since I’m still curious about people’s thoughts: What are your opinions on 1e’s race/species base class caps? I’d like to hear a few thoughts before I give mine.

Upon looking it up, I feel it’s only good for campaign setting, rather than game balance. Otherwise, it was good that it has been phased out in later generations.

I mean in general rather than for the current version, because it definitely wouldn’t work for the game post-2e Advance.

“Game Design” as an art/science wasn’t really a thing back in the 70s. In theory, class/race restrictions are a way to reinforce lore through game mechanics. But the rules are very convoluted, and a lot of restrictions don’t make sense. For example, the tree-loving elves can’t be druids or rangers.

I’m sure a lot of the oldschool stuff made sense at the time, but it’s easy to see why a lot of it was phased out.

Oh, I agree Gary’s version wasn’t very good. Humans having no restrictions while everyone else heavy (especially halflings) was bad.

Yeah, demihumans got screwed the most back then.

Gary was very human-focused.

I forgot to say my penny’s worth: I think it would be tricky and require the setting to justify the limit (like the Forgotten Realms’s controlling gods on steroids). People including myself like the freedom of newer systems (though I do think that some restrictions are needed to fuel creativity), so a system with race/species class limits has an uphill battle already. And 1e was not the way to go. Make humans the jack-of-all-trades, keep elves playing fighters and wizards able to cast in armor, make halflings more than worst dwarves, and you have the start of an interesting system.

I don’t think I ever talked about my weird physical collection of D&D books before. To get the boring books out of the way, for 5e I have the PHB, the DMG, the MM, as well as Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, Volo’s Guide to Monsters, the Dragonlance book, and the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle box set. For 4e I have the MM and that’s it (I also was gifted the starter set for the edition but have no idea where the booklet went so I’m not including that). For 3.5 I have the PHB and MM. 2nd Edition Advanced I have the PHB and DMG, but also a solo adventure called Thief’s Challenge meant for a DM and one player. I also have an issue 0 comic for a 4e comic series and a Dark Sun comic in one.

I got a physical copy of Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft today.

I played 1st edition dnd. I played as two elves .

One was a racist elf named thgil dub

and the other was a silly billy named Ispep

I had a hard time not surviving but trying t get Thgil Dub killed. Mangage to do so after bad connection on my end and lucky roll. I made the right call grabbing the magic curse dagger.

Also manage to get a nat 20 and hog tie and get a giant rat for a pet!

My Black Robed Mage minies arrived yesterday.
