Tropical Cyclone Thread

Hilary path moving a little more east, if not virtually unchanged, in latest advisory.

Still at 130 mph and 948 mb pressure. Will fluctuate but I’m not sure if there’s a lot of warm oceanwater left for it to go full Cat 5.

Category 5 hitting California, Arizona and Nevada

Latest advisory shows no significant changes to pressure or intensity. Path has shifted leftward but at this point a landfall in Cali as a hurricane is (hopefully) out of the question.

(A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued in LA, Orange and Ventura Counties, but that was hardly surprising.)

They’re still predicting further weakening tomorrow.

Seems like it’s tapped out here and is a moving a little quicker than usual. That’s the best news we’ve gotten thus far (if it stayed there for too long it would’ve been Ian 2.0 and just gotten more and more powerful).

Guys out there seems like overexaggerating about this storm.

Statistically, hurricanes landfalling in California at hurricane intensity are far more than extremely rare maybe as rare as hurricanes forming in Brazil.

As a guy who experience multiple hurricanes (we call them typhoons in our turf) on a yearly basis, we’ve already gotten used to storms as strong as that one except record breaking Cat 5 that full send landfalls at peak intensity.

IMO I think it’s because since tropical systems almost never hit SoCal (the last landfall was in 1938) and because of the dried up climate there (wonder why water in SoCal is so costly?) causing even 1 to 2 inches of rain to cause widespread flooding havoc (especially in mountainous areas, and the fact that there are no wetlands in LA to absorb floodwaters), people think the effects of even a tropical depression hitting the region will be equal to that of Harvey or Katrina.

Except…LA isn’t fucking Houston or New Orleans; Houston got pwned because they bulldozed nearly all their wetlands despite being on flat terrain (which LA isn’t), while New Orleans was a ticking time bomb (and still is) because of its low elevation.

LA is going to be messy on Sunday and Monday, but to suggest it will be a humanitarian catastrophe on the scale of Harvey and Katrina is just ignorance.

I guess it’s gonna be the rains that these guys are gonna be troubling at. I don’t even know how weather works in California anyways.

Maybe having tropical system on a non tropical regions are troublesome for those who live there.

I actually do wonder if the thing will dissipate quicker than forecast.

Hilary down to Cat 3. Moving fast at 16 mph. Projected path continues shifting east.

I predicted this will probably dissipate a little quicker than expected by the time it reaches SoCal. Forecast seem to be leaning on that.

Pressure rising fast. Maximum speeds down to 115 mph.

Latest update: Winds now at 110 mph. Pressure up to 959 mb.

Storm is moving quickly…and weakening quickly.

Yeesh. Hilary is fighting the cold Pacific oceanwaters and is losing big Tim thus far. Maximum wind speeds now down to 100 mph.

Maybe she picked the wrong ocean…

Guess Hil will have to settle for the Inland Empire, then.

Storm now at 85 mph winds. Should come down to tropical storm status later this morning just before it reaches CA.

Landfall at Baja Cali imminent.

Hilary has officially landed in Baja.

Pouring like hell in LA right now. Reports of streets getting flooded. Not something you expect there.

Hilary now officially in SoCal.

This is probably the most boring “historic” tropical storm I’ve ever seen. So many advantages it has against SoCal and the best it can dish out is…flooded roads and mudslides?

Record-breaking rainfall, floods in the Inland Empire, and first tropical system to hit SoCal in a century…and Hilary’s already becoming a non-story.

Atlantic hurricanes stay winning.

Now that Hilary is history, eyes are back on the Atlantic, and everything’s insane right now.

Harold just formed outside the Texas coast and is heading towards Corpus Christi.

Activity here in the West Pacific has resumed with Tropical Storm Saola. This thing is gonna do a loop-tee-loop close to me in the next several days because of a presence of a high pressure area in Japan. It looks like it will possibly intensify into a strong Category 4 super typhoon on Tuesday.

Saola (Goring) is now undergoing rapid intensification while doing a loop track. Forecast now suggests it will reach Super Typhoon status before hitting Taiwan on August 30.
