I’ve noticed that a particular character type has become especially popular in the 2000s and 2010s: A character who was formerly working for the villains, was trained by them and all, but switched to become a hero (usually after realizing how despicable the villains truly were).
 
Dunno if there’s a term for that character trope, but why do you suppose these types of characters have become so popular in recent media?

I mean, I can think of several off the top of my head, primarily from western cartoons but also live-action movies: Prince Zuko, Finn (the Star Wars sequels), Ashi, one of the changelings from MLP:FIM, and apparently* the titular characters from She-Ra and Carmen Sandiego.
 
*(I say “apparently” because I haven’t actually seen those, but I know enough about them based on what other people have told me.)
