I felt sorry for him because the show made it clear he didn’t want to be what he was but he had no choice. I thought the show made that point rather clear. It’s personally my favorite episode thus far of the series.

This seems to be a common reaction, but I actually buy Holo-sama’s explanation.
 
I’m just glad Cells is trying to add something to these characters, to try to add story elements that aren’t just there to set up a fight. They’re trying, which is good.

I actually saw more of a different reaction, at least on Reddit. I saw a lot of people saying how they actually are shocked they felt sorry for the cancer cell.

Also, it’s better they add depth to the cancer cell instead of just making him a big, bad monster of the week type villain. Those type of villains are good, but you need variety. You need some villains to be complex and fleshed out more instead of just straight cookie cutter.

And I like the fact they’re trying to do that too, since gives the characters depth.

Great. Now I’m getting chastised on Reddit because I posted something talking about me and DT and watching The Devil Is a Part-Timer and people are saying I’m stupid because we missed the point of the show. I love Reddit, but sometimes it bites me in the ass.

I would agree with you if they didn’t do this to something so unambiguously bad.

But that’s what makes it far more interesting. And it’s different from, say, painting Hitler to be a good guy. Hitler was human. Cancer is not. It’s easier to do something like this with cancer because cancer is not a person. It’s a disease. That cell didn’t want to be cancer. He was born that way. The show poses the question must we punish those who are born that way? Now, obviously, the answer is yes. It’s cancer, after all. But that cell never asked for any of this. He didn’t want to be cancer. He never asked to be cancer. He wants to be a functioning member of society.

Oh, you’re watching Yuki Yuna is a Hero? I heard that one was almost as much a gut-punch as Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

I suppose there are going to be viewers who have had a loved one afflicted with cancer, and I can understand if they absolutely hate that scene.

I did get the sense that it was going for Madoka. I know it’s not fair to say every magical girl show is a Madoka ripoff, but this one seems particularly close in terms of style and design.
 
Madoka also seemed pretty average at the start.

Most of the Studio Ghibli movies (since also many older ones were shown in a small but very comfortable cinema in an old train station in my hometown), Robotic Angel, Pokémon - The Movie, In this Corner of our World, Summer Wars, Miss Hokusai, Paprika, Appleseed, Akira, the Sailor Moon Movies and two more Animes, whose name I don’t know in English, and just too lazy to use Google right now. ;-)

My little sister really likes Hatsune Miku.

The problem…? 😅

It feels kinda weird that I was defending them making the cancer cell a sympathetic character given my dad died from breast cancer and the actor who played Robbie Rotten just passed away. Obviously, cancer sucks. However, I feel sorry for everyone who has cancer. Obviously, Cells At Work is different from the real world and a lot of people watch anime to escape from reality. Regardless, I feel it is important to say that we sometimes need reminders in anime of real world problems, like Cells At Work does. It may help put things in perspective. I still maintain that the cancer cell is sympathetic because it was a normal cell that was affected with cancer and not cancer itself. That’s why when my dad died from cancer and when Robbie Rotten died, it just hits me so hard. It’s so tough to see good people’s lives be ruined from such a horrible disease.
