Hyper-inflating nitpicks to be major criticisms.

There’s this one creative writing lesson that is weirdly stuck in certain people’s heads that the descriptor “said” is a bad thing to use and as such people carry whole lists of synonyms and alternatives to enforce variety. It’s something that bad writing critics will fixate on instead of the quality of the dialogue that preceded it. And many “beta readers” will fixate on that above everything else.

On the inverse, there’s “Lavender Unicorn Syndrome,” a term that originated in MLP fanfiction circles to describe writers who use the term “Lavender Unicorn” to describe Twilight instead of Twilight’s name.

These kind of structural aspects of a story get a lot of focus because they’re objective to spot, but they’re also insultingly trivial. Replacing “said” with “admonished” isn’t going to make the dialogue itself any better, and fixating on the fact that some writer used a descriptor over a pronoun to inflate their prose isn’t going to actually better the story.

This is why I focus on the core of a story like character work, themes, the quality of the plot, contrivances, all that stuff that’s harder to acknowledge because it affects a story more than anything else. These trivialities ultimately do not.

You’re showcasing where the dividing line is between fun and being an insufferable knob.

First, you’re asking if you’re a bad person for enjoying an aspect of something that is superfluous and completely detached from the work’s quality. Protip for life: If your question starts with “Am I a bad person for…” and the thing that immediately follows is not a crime, then the answer’s no. And you need to get over this puritanical “Good Person v Bad Person” mentality. The Jedi do shitty things, the Sith do noble things. This should not be that hard to grasp.

Secondly, there is a massive difference between making dumb theories and taking those dumb theories seriously.

That line from The Crystalling “The birth of an Alicorn is something Equestria has never seen” wasn’t just something that jossed headcanons and that was it. People were furious about it because it jossed their headcanons and contradicted tie-in materials that nobody actually read. The outrage over this one line designed to artificially inflate Flurry Heart’s special nature was nothing short of embarrassing.

I heard from Burner directly that Ink Rose was actually angry because it jossed one of her shitty headcanons she’s so attached.

Reading through the pearl-clutching whimpering of these sad sacks of shit, a lot of them were sobbing openly because something they only imagined turned out to just be their imaginations. They were so emotionally attached to their headcanons and so detached from reality that being confronted with it drove them to fits of rage.

When it was announced that Rainbow and Applejack’s parents were getting episodes, and it was hinted that Applejack’s parents were still alive, people flipped their shit AGAIN because for some reason bronies are really attached to the Apple siblings being orphans (creepy assholes).

And if that’s how you behave about your headcanons, if that’s how personally you take them being jossed, then fuck you.

If the above doesn’t apply to you, don’t behave as if it does.

Libel law is very clear that harsh criticisms or comments are not considered to be slander if they are true. You can argue semantics all you want, Burner, but any court would see that Lily believed everything she said to be true. 

Patchworkheart also fully agreed with what Lily said. If you want to say she lied, then you’re saying that they lied, too. 

And you’re saying that Lily denied the tangible evidence that you were in the US Marine, are that you’re not a “real” Marine in the machismo sense? Because I’m pretty sure that her crticisms against the Marines and disgraces to the military have been repeated by many people who were actually deployed.

Let’s face it.

Josh isnt satisfied with crushing my spirit. He has to kill everyone who called him out before he’s happy.

He’s tried to humiliate me and make me miserable. I offered him a chance to talk this out civilly like adults and he weinered out. Then, less than a week later, shows up on twitter like he had something to say. Time after time he tried to use me to attack lily, or talk to her, or this that and the other.

“I’m not happy, but I understand what you’re going through” isn’t permission.

“I need time to process what you’ve told me” is not permission.

You didn’t NEED my permission. You NEEDED your CAST’S PERMISSION.

And. You. Never. Talked. To. Them. About. Having. A. Call. With. Me.

Josh will do whatever it takes to shut Lily up. It makes me wonder if he’s ever had real friends before.
