Jehovah’s destruction in Tale of the Valkyrie.

Since Jehovah is an extremely divisive figure to a lot of people (not in-universe) it always made sense that he would have some sort of delusional entitlement to the Capital and believe he was justified in all the tyrannical shit he pulled throughout the entire galaxy. But at the same time, I’m not really into the “Complex, sympathetic protagonist” after it’s overuse in modern pop culture.

So I decided to kill two birds with one stone by having Jehovah try to give his “woe is me” justification to the only person in the main cast who simply doesn’t give a shit.

Tolrah, Phyaun, Sutanu, Ascentia and Elethyn would probably feel compelled to argue with Jehovah as “Jehovah is our Enemy” is what they’ve had drilled into their heads since they were little.

And Valithria would absolutely argue with Jehovah as she’s been personally violated by him multiple times in pursuit of his bratty fascism and the idea that Jehovah thinks he’s entitled to all of this is deeply offensive to her.

Magselyn, on the other hand, has never so much as heard of him before he burst into the Capital with an army of Angels, Void Horrors and Golems. And after watching him kill Megan and Tolrah and critically wound Ascentia, Elethyn, Valithria, Sutanu and Phyaun, she doesn’t care who he is or why he’s there.

Jehovah tried to kill her family, so Mags is simply not listening. She’s going to kill him no matter what he says.

It’s satisfying because it undercuts that whole “we NEED complex villains” idea and replaces any chance at complexity with a simple black-and-white reality: Crazy Man + Hurt Family = Kill Crazy Man. And I like doing weird and quirky shit like that.

So that was a lot of fun to write.

Just as a reminder. Lily is talking about the literal, CAPITAL G God that she is summarizing as having delusional entitlement issues. Mind you it’s still a story thats never actually been published and assumed to not exist, but if theres any sort of edginess out there that rivals making God your bad guy and then going so far as to make him….that, I am hard pressed to think of any.

There is, in and of itself, nothing wrong with a simple villain who is evil just because he is.
If it’s done properly it can make for a very effective and entertaining bad guy.

I actually did watch Gravity Falls when it first aired, I just lied about not bothering with it so people wouldn’t pester me with constant questions about every single detail.

Sometimes I want to watch something without being constantly harassed about it.

Hold up, you have to lie about what shows you’ve seen otherwise you get pestered with dumb asks From fans? That sucks. Do you have to do that with a lot of shows or just the ones with big fanbases?

Everything I don’t professionally talk about. If I watch it and I’m not covering it, I don’t tell you guys I’m watching it.

I find it creepy about how many people will coo about an actual still-milk-drinking baby having a gf/bf because they vaguely get along with another baby, but the moment someone has two young children being adorably gay/lesbian, there’s suddenly all sorts of hand wringing about “bUt ThEy’Re ToO yOuNg To UnDeRsTaNd!!!1!!” Checkmate, I had my first same-sex cheek kiss when I was 9 and already knew other girls were cute sometimes. It’s almost like it’s a way to veil their homophobia or something.

Look at some of the takes I make a lot.

Teen Titans Go isn’t bad and the original wasn’t the amazing hallmark that angry nerds like to pretend it is. 

Steven Universe is extremely tone-deaf and shouldn’t be treated like a sacred cow 

Lore and Worldbuilding hyperfixation is making shows worse 

Cartoons need to stop pretending to be an adult medium 

These are the takes the “Cartoon Community” opposes to universally. A common criticism of Western Animation Youtube Channels is that they all have the exact same opinions on the exact same shows and they repeat them ad nauseam. The only reason I ever talked about three of those things is because the “Cartoon Community” will never shut up about it.

We’re still in that era where telling someone directly that they’re wrong is the single most offensive thing in the world to some people. Of course they’re gonna start getting hostile when a Youtuber who shirks the established rulebook starts to gain more prominence.

The thing is: The audience ultimately decides. And more and more people are choosing the kind of material I produce now that it’s available to them.

2. Threatened Cottage Industry

One of the big things I do with my work is inoculate people against the mealy mouthed, waffling nonsense that a lot of Youtubers produce. Things like spamming “In my opinion” qualifiers, skits, bloated writing, ect are all things I specifically speak out against and have seen a lot of people say they can’t watch a lot of Youtubers anymore because they’re so used to the speed and directness of my videos.

So when people who’ve built an entire cottage industry are at the risk of rising standards, they tend to lash out. And insecure Youtubers facilitating harassment is something of an epidemic on Youtuber even though many of them will try to wash their hands of responsibility.

And it’s not just a delusion, it’s a reality. A lot of these channels are starting to experience slower and slower growth as more people who can make concise and content-rich videos without taking an eternity start to gain more prominence.

3. Good Old Fashioned Crybaby

Any criticism I get of being “abrasive” or “authoritarian” or some other tone argument, I usually take that as the viewer in question being angry about the take I made, but being unable to form a real counterargument. It’s why so many responses to the Steven Universe video tried to move the goalposts to shoot the messenger.

“How DARE you suggest Sugar is a Nazi sympathizer!”

“I didn’t, but even if I had, that’s what the material reads as.”

“HOW DARE!”

They leave the whole “woobifying space fascists” on the table because they don’t have an argument for it. So they just ignore it and try to create a narrative of “Lily Orchard Bad Person™” in the hopes of poisoning the well.

I watched a thread full of so-called “Progressives” decide it was a great idea to start linking to alt-right websites to spread the same slanderous rumors about me that cyber nazis have been trying to spread for over a decade. Just recently someone questioned the merits of Steven Universe deserving an award for LGBT representation on that same subreddit and the people who responded didn’t so much argue against him as they did scream at him for even suggesting that Steven Universe wasn’t perfect.

These kind of people, sobbing openly at the idea that a cartoon is bad, are nothing new. They’ve been a plague on every medium for a while. Gamers freak out about Review Scores all the time and have histrionic fits over them. And those people are ones also creating content. So they get to dictate the narrative so long as nobody questions them.

The irony in these people calling me a tyrant, and then going full Vladamir Putin when questioned is not lost on me.

4. Bigotry

My takes are not unique or original. They’re made by a lot of people. The “Garbage and Here’s Why” videos were started by Hbomberguy, and yet I’m the one mentioned when a new video crops up with that title style.

The fixation and aggressiveness on one of the few non-white, non-straight, non-cis people in this particular wheelhouse is blatant and obvious. The people on Ghazi, who throw their shit at the wall whenever my name is mentioned, have been called out directly on this by other viewers on the subreddit saying that if it were Jim Sterling they’d think it was great. This criticism is, again, sidestepped entirely.

Then you get openly bigoted people like Sarah Z flat out lying about me and presenting my work as if I were a straight white cis person.

People who openly talk about how progressive and “woke” they are rarely are so. Sargon of Akkad likes to call himself a “Classical Liberal” and claim he’s on the Left when his opinions, actions and views skew HARD Right. Lunacorva, Josh’s latest suck-up, likes to call himself progressive and liberal. But he’s constantly giving the Right the benefit of the doubt and antagonizing the Left.

It’s a lie. They’re lying about their own beliefs, and position their own extremist views as the center simply on the basis of “Well I believe it, so it must be rational and centrist.”

I’ve always hesitated about calling myself “woke” because I’ve made too many mistakes and misfires to believe that I don’t have my own biases to continue working through.

Are we really surprised that a group of Centrists and White Liberals will openly engage in low-key bigoted behavior when their ego is threatened?
