They only “screwed up” as you said because they were interrupted. With a bolt of lightning from Celestia. That is why Nyx in the story was a filly in the first place, so we can assume that is why NMM is one too.
 
You know, now that I think about it… Hellboy kinda has a lot in common with Nyx. Things I thought I never say for 15, Alex!

Because without that bullshit “infected with the evil of nightmare moon” part the cult would be much weaker so she would most likely see them as idiots who can’t really give her back her full power.

Fair enough. But here’s a question, if we go by the rhought of “this is what Past Sins should have been” then what is stopping the evil cult who brought back NMM from going up to her when she’s alone and telling her they can return her to full power so she can go back to her supervillain ways?

Well of course she would tell Celestia. Celestia would give Moon a second change if she behaves herself. Plus everyone would know she’s NNM and she has to earn there trust and whatnot.

Yeah. That’s why for something I’m writing, Nightmare is being punished by having to learn the magic of friendship. Only reason she’s not back on the moon.

True. Which would be a good story, but not a serious one.
 
Now Past Sins is pretty serious in tone, more so in later chapters, so let’s try in think of how to have that tone with a filly NMM. Let’s say the story starts the same, and is like that all the way to the point Twilight finds Nyx, or in this case filly!NMM.  
Now the reason Twilight didn’t tell Celestia that she Nyx was NMM was because nyx didn’t act like her. What is her excuse for a filly!NMM?

I just like to imagine she would be running around, being disobedient to Twilight and authority in general. It would probably be a completely different story.

Pretty good picture, though NMM should have those reptile eyes.

I often see statements like your’s when I see some PS works but I always wondered how they think a filly NMM with all her memories would have improved the story. I’m actually curious.

the thing that looks weird imho… nmm eyes. And I don’t mean lack of cat pupils but also their shape. I don’t remember when I saw pony with perfect circle shaped eyes
