My head canon: Derpy and Dinky are cousins.

Actually, Derpy & CT we owe to Elosande entirely _{(and to her legendary “emptied your fridge” comic)}. There wasn’t even as much as some PSNTEO between those two prior to Luna Eclipsed, and even that barely qualifies - making this 100% fan-invented.
 
There’s clearly a WS/CT shipper among the animators, and indeed it’s a nice scene, just pointing out that there are so many animators who aren’t (don’t make me list all of CT’s colt interactions or Dinky’s adult mares), making any claims about bg canon a huuge stretch.

Anyway, Lyra being the one to jump excitedly in the background? Asset re-use. I suspect the same thing is going on with Golden Harvest Carrot Top and Written Script at the train station: They were portrayed saying goodbye at the train station in “The Last Roundup”, then put in a folder labeled “ponies aloha-ing at Ponyville train station”. Still, that’s just speculation on my part, but it does make me wonder, outside of TLR and the train station scenes in “Just for Sidekicks” and “Flight to the Finish”, how many times have Carrot Top and Written Script been seen together?
 
And just let me add: I have nothing against thinking of Carrot Top, Written Script, and Dinky as a family; that one shot in TLR is clearly meant to imply as much, and as Carrot Top has long been Derpy’s closest friend in fanon, it makes the “honorary aunt” headcanon a very natural explanation of the DerpDink fanart. I just think that, with very rare exceptions, BP use (at least before season 5) is virtually random and incapable of canonically supporting any speculation/fanon/headcanon with any authority.

It’s true that they cared little for canonicity in the BG ponies. But Written and Carrot were the exception. Just like Lyra being the one to jump excitedly in the background in like 3 different episodes, Carrot and Written have been in more together. They are VERY clearly shown to be a couple, and that one of them works outside of ponyville too. They’re always at the train station saying goodbye. This is not an accident that they would be this consistant. To pretend it is, is clearly ignoring the truth.
 
And then we see Dinky next to them. Now this is where it just feels implied. We’ve nothing to go on other than them standing near each other. But up until now they at least had that over Derpy who’s never been near Dinky.
 
But then we also see Derpy with Carrot a few times. The fandom paired them up very quickly, before we saw them together in Nightmare Night.
 
Using all that, my headcanon was that Derpy is friends with Carrot, and Carrot is the mother of Dinky. Because you know, there’s something to go off of. Derpy being Dinky’s mum? That had 0% evidence. That’s not even headcanon, that’s just fanon. And this picture up there? That was made specifically for us, to let it upgrade to headcanon.
 
Even with it being fanon, the Derpy and Dinky art I see here is absolutely lovely! If the show wants to make it canon, then I am okay with that. Just so long as they don’t ruin the Written+Carrot canon they already have.
 
 
Oh right the point I was trying to make. If you connect two characters together over appearance alone, you’re an awful person. If you pair them up based on standing near each other, you’re slightly less awful.

Derpy’s really a hermaphrodite, and is Dinky’s father as well as her mother.
 
But that’s a actually a lie, and while Derpy is her mother, her father is the entire 1989 Denver Broncos team.

Letting the fans run wild with headcanons,  
Watching fans debate each other over characters that have little to nothing canonical,  
Sounds like a good time to me!
 
Actually what I would like to have as headcanon is that, a child character who is very reasonable in the face of a confused or a irresponsible parent, like Derpy or Berry Punch, and is actually ageless and with great powers, but prefers using her image as a child to hide in the background and influence important events indirectly.  
Mostly because I would like to see someone godlike act as a counter balance to Discord.  
Discord likes attention and to feel important. But what if Dinky was his direct opposite?  
Dinky has never been seen wanting attention or to feel important.  
What if Dinky played a less dramatic role of Bon Bon, following important events like monster attacks, but simply by being in the background and quietly influencing those who want to or should take a role to fix things?  
What if Derpy is just a manifestation of Dinkys desire for childlike innocence? But because she is actually as old as Discord she has literally already seen it all already?  
Wee!  
See everyone? See how fun this show can be?  
Isn’t this what everyone did with toys and action figures from big movies or major toy lines?  
Screw the already established script and story line? What was the name of the cool guy with the gun? Eh who cares! I’ll make up my own new story!

I can’t art at all, but I wrote a 50,000 word fanfic where Carrot Top and Written Script were Dinky’s parents, and Derpy was her honorary aunt. So there.

Yeah, Dinky’s had as much fanart related to the new episode uploaded to Derpibooru as the Cake family and the Groucho mask pony combined. Granted, the wacky waving inflatable tube pony has had one image more, or infinitely more, depending on how you want to measure it…

My own take has always been that Derpy is Dinky’s daughter with some unknown stallion, whom she divorced at some point. They’re still on friendly terms, though he moved to Canterlot after the divorce. Carrot Top helps Derpy look after Dinky, whenever work gets in the way, and often takes her to Canterlot whenever she has bussiness in the capital.
 
But I like your idea about Written Script. I’m going to use it.

I like to think that Derpy isn’t related to Dinky, but is a great friend of Carrot Top’s (Dinky’s mother) and as Derpy and Carrot are so close, and have known each-other for years, Derpy is almost like an Auntie to Dinky, and looks after her quite often, taking her out to the park and elsewhere around Ponyville. ^^
