I actually do own one, and I can’t say anything about how they work on carpets, but on hardwood laminate, they are surprisingly effective at keeping down all that dust and, if you have pets, hair that tend to build up over time.
 
and they’re extra useful if you have couches that are high enough off the floor for it to fit under like we do.
 
it’s not enough to permanently replace regular, hands on house cleaning, but it definitely extends the amount of time you can go between cleanings.

Are Roombas really useful (besides being taxis for animals)?
