Spike steps out, merc tries to stop him, merc gets gunned down for easy target.
 
I’m firmly of the mind that Spike is fully expendable, and the fact that he has had such close ties to the princess has him with a front row seat to the chopping block.
 
I mean, he lives in the dumps, and his job, while a “high rise” job, barely gets any food in his belly.

That’s the thing, if he was expendable, why do they ask for him back? He’d kinda have to be worth something, and considering the briefcase seems to hold nothing of consequence, it seems more like Spike himself was the package being delivered.

Considering the briefcase was bugged, and the minimal security, they clearly expected him to get hijacked. It’s not JUST the bug, but also the fact that the backup arrived so quickly.
 
I mean, if you were a nujob ruler who was convinced everyone was out to get you and you’re out to take out a notorious group of mercs, why not send one who could bring about emotional ties and more easily be brought with said group.

Now I have to wonder what’s Spike’s position in those evil plans

This would be a perfect way to introduce the stooges that are trying to get to Spike to dragonfire…probably be the first time in forever that he’s tasted roasted pony flesh…not to mention I think he’s been holding that from him for the longest time.
 
(I know that the episode Equestrian Games isn’t canon to this story, but it would be a hell of a return to Spike dragonfire blast where he saved the crowds from that enormous falling iceberg)
