Before rapid chemical tests, that used to be a way to measure fat content. You’d put a standardized amount of the test substance on a piece of standardized chromatography paper, and see how big the clear circle would eventually grow. There were a lot of old tests like that we don’t do much any more. Adding sulfuric acid to something and seeing how brown it turned, as a measure of sugar content. That’s been largely replaced by selective membrane permeability electrodes. Or nitric acid, as a measure of protein content. That’s been largely replaced by the reduction of copper in the presence of bicinchonic acid, or by the Bradford reaction shifting Coomassie Brilliant Blue dye from its red to its blue form

oil has the ability to turn material like paper transparent. you can see this for yourself easily enough, just get some regular old notebook paper and olive oil.
