That’s actually a smart way to think about it. Season 5 has been the best in my opinion.

While the delivery could of been far more refined, it was definitely one of the best in terms of actually getting Twilight to open up and be honest with herself and her serious problems and issues, and not just around Sunset or Moondancer. It was no Amending Fences, but few are.
 
On the other hand, besides the decption thing Discord had a hand in setting it up, it fealt like the other 5 WANTED Twilight to be honest with herself even if it caused her some sadness. Just like Amending Fences showed, Twilight’s not going to mature unless she actually feels the situation. Twilight was getting depressed recently, getting bored of reading and all that. When she tried to sink deeper to try and relieve herself, her friends decided that a little ribbing to get her to be honest was in order. Discord, of course, set things in motion more then they realized, and the result was thus.
 
The other 5 acted pretty suspicious when they were playing along with Twilight’s re-enactment strategy. Normally they try to talk down Twilight’s insane moments, but this time they seemed to want Twilight to sort her problems out for herself.
 
Considering Twilight’s lifestyle and issues, increasing the coddling instead of decreasing it would of been one of the worst things they could of done as Twilight’s friends. A concept this season greatly appreciates, making their friendships stronger. I love S5 :)

This one simply wasn’t a good episode for a variety of reasons, from a muddled plot and resolution to some forced behaviors to make said plot work. On top of that, it just wasn’t funny.

I think Discord is their friend the same way Cranky is Pinkie’s friend. He’ll help in a pinch and wishes them well in his own way, but their personalities are too clashing to hang out much.
 
And they turned on him because he was being an asshole to Twilight.

Five years on and the fate of Equestria still doesn’t depend on her keeping up with her friends. Though DisQord as a friend is a rather strange concept in, and in of itself. OK Cele kinda shipped him on Fluttershy, but it doesn’t explain why the other four joined in. Or, why they were so quick to turn on him. Once his trolling became clearer.

From their perspective, she doesn’t understand the joke, and for the sake of being princess of friendship and the good of equestria feels like she needs to, so they help her recreate things as best they can.

Well, I think that you are wrong to invalidate the argument. It just puts a finger on one of the episode’s flaws. Twilight’s reenactment should have been a sizable hint that she was not okay with their in jokes being shoved in her face and that she was not willing to admit her feelings to anyone.

Twilight probably just needs to read some more books on how inside jokes work, and some books on sociology in order understand why friends are better then books. Then again…. This is more or less how I live my sorry added life. “Friends”, are little more then annoying colleagues your forced to work with. Then fail to exist when you punch the clock. So I can understand Twi’s Books > Friends quandary. The difference here is I don’t bother wasting such time on those inside jokes.

Actually I’d say the comic misses the point of the episode (as well as what happened in it). Her friends weren’t purposefully rubbing the fact that they had an inside joke in or even the ones really doing the repeated mentions. Discord brought them up a lot, but then as the story suggests at the end that he’s doing so somewhat purposefully to teach a lesson. Heck, Twilight probably brings up the joke more than any of her friends do. And her friends laughing at an inside joke may be a little frustrating, but Twilight spends most of the episode pretending it doesn’t bother her, telling her friends that she’s fine, and outright trying to recreate the weekend activity so she can see for herself what transpired. Not to mention the fact that she slips into paranoia mode and tries to resort to potions and magic before even trying a simple conversation like, “hey, guys, I feel left out here. It’s not fun to here you laugh about something I missed.”
 
I get that some people didn’t like the episode, and that’s fine. I just don’t think that this makes a valid point in support of that attitude.

It was on par with the “The mysterious maredowell” episode, because it goes for the wrong moral. Passive aggression is not helpful in problem solving, and making a friend feel like an outsider is being nice. Confound these ponies.

I knew we’d get a scene parody like this eventually.

I was likewise starting to wonder if Grieffon had in fact watched a completely different episode than I had.

I shall explain to you why I did not like it; I am certain that I am not the only one who feels this way. It boils down to two main reasons.
 
The first is a complete lack of sympathy for Twilight (this might just be me…). She missed out on a weekend with friends. This causes her to have a minor crisis. She overreacts to such a degree that I am unable to relate to her. She overhears some inside jokes and then goes insane over it. It is completely irrational. She makes a very big deal out of very unimportant things. She has spent much time with her friends, and will spend a whole lot more; missing out on one weekend is not cause for alarm, even if they have come up with some stupid inside “jokes”.
 
The second is that it just wasn’t entertaining. The episode is good at making you feel as uncomfortable as Twilight; this is good for the message it was trying to send, but is good for having a fun time watching it. The inside “jokes” are about as entertaining to us as to her… though even the one we were privy to wasn’t funny. Overall, even if Twilight was sympathetic, I wouldn’t think it was a good episode at all due to this, and I am not the only one who felt this way.
 
Those are the reasons I don’t like it; your mileage may vary, however.

There seems to be a running joke about Twilight being unable to express her feelings to her friends, and they being totally clueless about them as a result. There’s been at least two instances when this has happened before:

Can confirm, none of her friends rubbed it in her face or overused their jokes. They only even referenced the jokes at the start before all saying sorry to Twilight after realizing she didn’t get it. Discord was the only one to push things and emphasize how much fun they had WITHOUT her.
 
Then Twilight herself being the nutter she is, tried to recreate the events so she could be included. That is a level of jealousy that’d make me worry about someone’s mental health. Here she was explicitely asking for the jokes to be explained to her, so you can’t claim they were rubbing it in her face here either. Even Discord saying that the only difference was Twilight herself, even if he was trying to be nasty, was just making sense instead. Twilight’s not a very good princess of friendship if she really thinks that special moments between friends can be reproduced. So as crazy as this was, I guess this did help teach her something important.
 
Well you’d’ve thought so. Instead she proves that she is even more worryingly insane when she deludes herself into thinking that her friend COULDN’T have had such a fun time if there was no logical explanation to their fun. How does she understand so little about in-jokes? They’re usually not funny in the slightest when analyzed. It’s the memory they evoke that makes them funny… Or something like that.
 
As Twilight’s friends point out, her assuming they were all being reckless and got themselves enchanted by Discord is the first actually rude thing any character has done. That and accusing Discord of being and evil enchanter of course.
 
Telling them that if she doesn’t find it funny, then it’s not funny. Ugh, reminds me of a really bad friend I had.
 
Twilight reveals her feelings finally. Friends apologise. Twilight herself admits they did nothing wrong.
 
It’s open to interpretation however if Discord was actually trying to respect Twilight’s wishes and leave her to her books, or was infact being a dick.
 
And then the meme effect. Jokes got overused until they stopped being funny.
 
The end. After Discord gets a little taste of his own medicine. Which as dramatic as he was about it, he got over very quickly.

This mindset that you have really is one the episode discourages. The episode went exactly as I thought it did. Her friends did nothing wrong. I myself have been in Twilight’s position. I simply pretended I got the jokes and ignored them usually. Until I somehow started finding them funny for real and then used them myself. Being exposed to in-jokes enough is usually all it takes to get them. Sure it’s embarrassing when you do use it in the wrong context, but if you wanna be a part of it. Then try being a part of it. Or continue to ignore it until is passes. It is incredibly selfish to tell our friends not to make jokes you don’t find funny. Or to leave the conversation if they’re talking about things that don’t directly interest you. Because you can be certain they’re listening to you talk about things they’re not interested in, and that they don’t find all of your jokes funny either. That’s how friendships work. Unless you’re friends with your own clone I guess.

I for one wouldn’t have been surprised if Pinkie had actually done this. I could see her doing this just because the power of suggestion that the potion was supposed to do something made her realize something even if was a placebo effect.
 
I was glad that others apologized to Twilight for making her feel left out at the end.

I thought the mane6 did nothing wrong, and that Twilight was just hiding her feelings, making herself feel worse. That the entire moral was that she should have admitted things straight away and realized that her friends can have fun without her. Instead you’re defending her self-centered actions? The ones she learns to not do anymore? Can you see why I am so confused?
 
Because of your comments I am going to have to watch the episode again, because you’re describing something so different to what I saw. I’ll post back in 22 minutes or so.

I honestly thought it treated her character well, highlighting flaws and I don’t think Discord was being anymore malicious than he usually is.
