Oh, that. The thing with Cherry Berry. I remember that now, and in all honestly I think it’s a steaming pile of bullcrap. Regardless of how you see Dash, that scene is just silly and I think it’s one of the things in MMDW that was handled particularly terribly. I’m not even going to take that scene seriously, honestly, there’s just no way. Regardless of how you interpret Dash, that’s just taking it to hugely hyperbolic extremes that don’t even make a damn bit a sense. You seem to agree with me that MOTFE was pretty silly, but it pales in comparison to this. It’s just lunacy.
Bragging about it? Sure, I could have seen that, but she absolutely would have saved the pony first, she won’t just let someone stay in a state of peril like that. That scene is just one of the reasons why I try not to think too much about MMDW, because my only reaction to something like that is the writers didn’t put a bit of thought into that scene. I don’t see how they could screw it up so badly, but maybe they were just thinking in the moment rather than thinking about whether or not it was anything resembling sane characterization. I’m perfectly content to exclude that scene from the canon, in all honesty.
But enough ranting on that… And on the note of Cider Season… I actually thought it was pretty sweet in it’s own way that she went to get Fluttershy. Forceful or not, she didn’t want her friend to miss out on the cider, and she went way out of her way to go and get her even though she was already worried that she would be too late. If she wasn’t in such a rush, I don’t think she would have been so pushy about it. Either way, she could have just as easily went herself, but she went far out of her way to bring her friend with her.
As for that scene with Daring Do…. I mean, the right thing to do would be to help out, but… Dash sees Daring Do as this action hero sort of character, so in all her fan-girling I guess she sort of saw her as invincible. I’m sure she would have jumped in to help regardless, but she was a bit caught up in watching the awesome display of Daring Do fight the bad guys, haha. It does make less sense for the others to not immediately intervene, though.
And ultimately, I still very much disagree that this deleted scene would have been appropriate or in-character. It would take a silly level of ignorance to not understand that it was cruel, especially when it involves pointing out someone specific, and also because she’s so friendly. I don’t think we’re going to reach agreement on this or many of the other topics being discussed here. There are plenty of other things that could be said here I’m sure, but with a lot of this stuff I’m stressing myself to find the right words for it, so I’d like to be ending the discussion soon if possible.
The dream was more scary because it’s a Barney-esque ‘mindless’ sort of cutesy, with the singing flowers and all sorts of things like that… something like that would bother a lot of people, but the writers put some hyperbole in that scene for comedy purposes. I think there’s a big difference between that and actual, ‘normal’ cute stuff though, and singing flowers aren’t exactly related to ‘lovey-dovey’ or mushy/sappy stuff in the first place, so I’m not about to agree that it has any relevance to her soft side.
And of course she dreams about “awesome” stuff, her having a sweet/soft side doesn’t discount her being awesome, haha. I don’t see any reason why she couldn’t have both awesome and sweet dreams.
Either way, I very strongly disagree with the idea that she’s afraid of her soft side or something like that. Again, I just say that she tends to hide it in public. You can see little tidbits of it all the time though, like with Tank, or the theater in Rarity Takes Manehattan, group hugs, etc. I’d give more examples, but honestly it’s been a long time since I’ve watched many of the older episodes.
that scene with the autographing
That’s the one where she let Cherry Berry plummet to what would have been her doom if MDW hadn’t jumped in, on account of autographs to sign.
Either way, as a whole, she treats Fluttershy well
Most of the time. She also mocked her for being scared in the Series Premiere– and of the sleeping dragon in Dragonshy– and dragged her forcibly to the opening of Cider Season. The point isn’t that Dash is a complete sphincter all the time, but that she doesn’t (or at least didn’t) give much consideration to how her blunt and brusque demeanor might come across as profoundly sphincterish to the people she was being blunt at.
Usually her pranks don’t involve scaring people though
Most of them do, actually; she used that lightning gag to bury Celestia in scrolls by proxy via startling Spike into magic hiccups, and pretty much all the zingers at Gilda’s party were of the GOTCHA! variety.
everyone in the Mane 6 but Pinkie just suddenly decides to take a big bite out of it?
MOTFE is one of the rare episodes I just don’t like, because as much as I loathe the reflexive screech of “OOC!!1!” that’s so popular among the fandom any time characters do something the screechers don’t like, the cakebiters really did feel like they were acting well outside of their usual personalities. It’s twice as baffling because AKR usually has the most solid and consistent characterization of any of the regular writers.
And her fan-girling over Daring Do?
…Was fangirling done while DD was getting the stuffing kicked out of her by a gang of criminals. Twilight was just as guilty, but this is a squad that charged without hesitation into a literal army of bugmonsters, FFS.
Destroying the weather factory was irresponsible, and I don’t think she really thought through the consequences
That’s Dash in a nutshell– she does things that come across as full jerkwad behavior in the moment, but it’s not because she’s a jerkwad all the time, she just doesn’t think about how it comes across. This deleted scene clearly isn’t her being knowingly malicious– she honestly seems to think that G-A
G doesn’t care that she dislikes him-she’s just saying cruel $#!+ because she doesn’t understand that it’s cruel. Her worst nightmare was literally a parody of older MLP generations/Care bears type things with her dreams being heavy metal beatdowns of changelings,If she has a soft side shes afraid of it.
You’ve clearly not met many wiki editors…
Eh, why update the wiki with information from a deleted, and thus non-canon scene?
The ones on there you could argue to be mean are the competition, the prank, and being rather forceful with Fluttershy. And the prank one, I dunno, it wasn’t a nice thing to do per se, but she probably wouldn’t expect it to have that effect on Luna. Usually her pranks don’t involve scaring people though. I guess it being the Halloween equivalent for MLP was a part of it, but ehh…
The competition was of course her cheating because she really didn’t want to lose, which is again not nice, but I wouldn’t say it was her intention to be mean just for the sake of it or anything like that. She was being unfair for sure, but yeah. Applejack and Dash are good friends, but in earlier seasons their competitive attitudes made them put a bit of friendly rivalry into a lot of things. I don’t think she would have done it if it weren’t with Applejack or someone else who could have matched her competitiveness at the time. And I’d say she learned her lesson from that episode either way, which was a very early episode mind you.
As far as that scene with the autographing, I don’t recall it or what she did there, honestly. It’s been a long time since I’ve watched MMDW, and I try not to put too much thought into it, because I kinda think that the writers could have handled the episode as a whole much better. Despite what some people seem to believe, the writers aren’t perfect, and I feel they are very much capable of doing a poor job with some things every now and then. I think this is an important thing to consider when it comes to these discussions. Either way, maybe I’ll rewatch that episode sometime.
The pushing Fluttershy out the door thing is probably the one thing on your little list of pictures that I’d call particularly mean. Perhaps it’s another scene where the writers could have handled it better, to not be so damned extreme, especially when Rainbow has been shown to be friends with Fluttershy for a long time and is nice to her. Regardless, it’s her being pushy, while the deleted scene we’re discussing is her literally telling someone within earshot that she ‘dislikes’ them, which is very directly mean. And maybe you could argue she was being pushy because she thought the dragon migration would be really cool and she didn’t want Fluttershy to miss it, I dunno. Either way, as a whole, she treats Fluttershy well.
Bringing up the cake is an odd choice. Although, it was odd that all of the characters chose to take a bite in the first place. It’s like one of those situations that would be extremely unlikely to happen in real life and really just doesn’t make sense. I mean, an expensive, special cake for an important competition, and the everyone in the Mane 6 but Pinkie just suddenly decides to take a big bite out of it? I thought that whole episode was sitting on a shaky premise in the first place.
And her fan-girling over Daring Do? Twilight may not be terribly amused, but how is that mean? if anything it’s just showing her enthusiasm, which I’d say is often one of her good traits.
Destroying the weather factory was irresponsible, and I don’t think she really thought through the consequences since she was so focused on stopping her beloved pet tortoise from having to hibernate, but it’s not what I’d call mean. If anything, it’s the opposite, because it showed how much she really adores her pet. I’d say it reaffirms my assertion that she cares deeply for the ones she’s close to, and loves to spend time with them, etc. Taking out the weather factory just to stop a few months of hibernation is a pretty extreme measure (if it was something more serious, like to save Tank or someone else from danger or to stop permanent/long-term separation, then it would be very much justifiable, mind you), but this is just one of those things where intentions matter. Call it inconsiderate or something if you must, but it’s certainly not mean.
Anyway, the bottom line is that I never said her track record is 100% perfect or anything. None of the characters in the show are without their low points. The point I’m making is that I’m terribly tired of Dash being portrayed as this mean, uncaring jerk, when in reality she’s very friendly and cares deeply for her friends, and tries her best to be good to them.
She can be brash, or impulsive, doesn’t always think it all the way through, and stuff like that, but she can also be really friendly, supportive, sensitive, caring, protective, etc. Some people try to write her as this unpleasant, harsh pony, which is clearly not the case. And this deleted scene would have really stuck out as a character just being a huge jerk, so I maintain my positions that it would have been OOC. And I feel it’s worth mentioning that Dash hates jerks and bullies, really. She protected Fluttershy from them when they were foals, and she’d do the same for any of her friends now.
Typed this up comparatively quickly, so my apologies if there are any typos. Probably could have worded a lot of it better, but it’ll have to do. Bottom line is that I think Dash is a very nice and caring pony, even if she has, in the past, unintentionally done or said some things that are insensitive. And I think she’s gotten a lot better about being sensitive. Not that I ever thought she was at any point oblivious to other peoples feelings or anything, just that she had moments every now and then where she briefly forgets or just doesn’t think it all the way through. Something like that.
there’s not a chance she’d be so outright mean
And mind you, she’d never intentionally mistreat her friends or hurt their feelings, because she cares about them a LOT and is ultimately a very good friend, it’s just that she has, on occasions, impulsively said things that can come off as insensitive. Not her intentions, and she’d definitely feel really bad if you pointed them out, but it has happened before anyway. She’s gotten a lot better at not doing that however, and in general seems to be capable of being pretty sensitive.
But stuff like this scene doesn’t fit the whole “unintentionally blurt something out that might come off as hurtful” idea, as it’s just downright mean and is just going too far, so I’m not about to accept it as anything other than OOC. It would have been a shitstorm maybe on par with the MMDW fiasco, so thank god the writers cut it so it won’t be canon.
Not to mention I’m personally not a fan of shipping in the canon, so I wouldn’t have been a fan of more stuff related to that being in the show itself. The exception is characters that are introduced as a couple like Mr and Mrs Cake or Shining Armor and Cadance, but ehh… didn’t come here to discuss shipping, just wanted to mention it, I guess. I’m kinda tired, and wording this stuff is hard, so I’ll be going now.
Dash has no problem with sweet/sappy stuff, she just doesn’t generally want to show them in public because she’s somehow under the impression that it would change her reputation… somehow, I don’t think that would change her reputation. Anyway, in more private locations, I think she’d be plenty sweet and affectionate. She has no problem with ‘lovey dovey’ or ‘mushy’ stuff. What she does have is a problem with flaunting it around where everyone can see. In private with a lover or something, I’m sure it’d be okay.

Gallop-A-Gus may be the dumbest name I’ve heard out of the entire franchise
As someone else pointed out, it was probably a Horse Pun™ of Galapagos, and he likely would have had a tortoise or an island for a cutie mark.
Also, Gallop-A-Gus may be the dumbest name I’ve heard out of the entire franchise, and that’s saying something.
Most likely because of her hatred of “mushy” and “Lovey dovey” stuff,I think this stallion would represent a big bag of feelings and things she’s not into,a “tom-girl” to her tom-boy if you will.
also the idea of RD having a “stalker” fanboy immediatly bring these images to mind
