Exactly. Pretty much the first time I saw that word was here on derpibooru in the tags, and checking it out I got so many different pics I couldn’t find what was common in them.

Probably because American might not be their primary language. I mean, when I look up “midriff” in my English-Danish dictionary, the translated term is “diaphragm”. The only terms my english teacher used for the midriff were “belly”, “stomach” or when he wanted to be really sophisticated “abdomen”. So, it’s probably just a matter of people not being aware of other terms.
