Yeah, because Chrysalis is a Changeling, and she literally feeds on love. Shining Armor never got a boost because Twilight was around, and Shining being around in TCE didn’t stop Cadance from being exhausted.
Well, Sombra’s strength was never really shown other than showing love magic harmed and could destroy him. Twilight’s using her regular magic, which he could very well be resistant to.
There’s a very simple and incredibly obvious reason: Radiant Hope is there, and she’s still madly in love with Sombra. Remember, love is a source of magic power in Equestria–recall how in the show Chrysalis used the love she stole from Shining Armor to overpower Celestia. Radiant Hope is powering Sombra up to ludicrous levels here.
Twilight in that shot did not use dark magic just because certain spells are neither good nor bad. But there was still a lot of aggression and hatred in that attack. So Radiant Hope can be very damaged.
We don’t know what kind of requirements Sombra had for his banishment curse. For all we know, Celestia might have known that he couldn’t do it again without prep time or something.
That moved =never stupid auto correct.
Actually no it doesn’t because they moved actually established they could actually stop it from disappearing again. They also keep talking about how it can’t fall again. It makes Celestia come off as a complete amoral dumbass.
It devalues the tension, but it also reduces the sheer disregard of Celestia sending Twilight to the Crystal Empire with such a mental handicap just for a test. If she fails, no huge deal, Celestia and Luna can just sweep in and fix it, and postpone Twilight’s ascension for when she’s actually ready.
And yes, his ‘Princess Petrification’ spell is a little OP, but I take it as a device to save time on battles that would waste valuable panel space. As far as I’m concerned Sombra and Hope vs a wounded Celestia and a Luna who’s already ‘struggling’ with Chrysalis and has her back half turned = Sombra wins.
We also have to consider what the comics had revealed about his previous battle with them. He admitted he stood no chance. He has just admitted he knew how to release the umbrum before that point but… didn’t.
It’s quite possible he was entirely intending to commit suicide by cop. It would fit what we’ve seen of his self loathing so far.
If Sombra was taken out so easily, he’s not a threat to the sisters. If he’s not a threat that the sister’s have any trouble with, then there is no real tension. It devalues the heroes and doesn’t build up the villains or allow us to care. You can argue that is the reason Celestia sent the elements without, you know, the elements. If something went wrong, Celestia and Luna could sweep in and best Sombra once more. Of course, that would lead to the possible risk of using the spell again. Cheap, but effective.
It’s not to say that it wasn’t a short fight, I just refuse to on principle. Why? Well…I just want some more epic fights in mlp history. It’s very hard to gauge powers, strengths and limits in characters we really don’t get to see fight.
While the comics have their problems, a part of why I enjoy them is because it delivers interesting powers and showcases magical and strength proportions we don’t normally see in mlp outside of two parters and even then, it’s usually constrained to the main six and some of the villains.
It might not have been the whole fight, but there’s no reason to disbelieve that’s how they beat him.
Actually, that was a simplification of what happened. We don’t know if it was that simple and it probably wasn’t. Sombra had the power to banish the entire city of the Crystal Empire. That would take a considerable amount of magic. If not beat them, he would certainly put up a fight.
In the show, Celestia and Luna defeated him with a simple double horn lasee, with no artifacts involved and no sign of them being injured or struggling. That’s certainly not the same Sombra as “Mr. I Oneshot Both Princesses Simultanously With No Prep Time”.
Sombra has always been portrayed as a juggernaut style character, specifically weak against very limited things. At no point has he faced anything that challenged him in his show appearance (he split the princesses up, and stole the crystal heart) so I call it legit.
Plus… damn, he’s just badass. Don’t fault me for admiring a villain capable of providing a decent challenge without copious amounts of “Well why can’t Twilight just vaporize this douchbag?”
Twilight didn’t have any sign of dark magic eyes in the next panel, and her beam was her normal purple.
It probably didn’t hurt him much simply because comic!Sombra is ridiculously strong for some reason.
Unfortunately/fortunately Twilight’s not really in the mood for friendship and happy thoughts right now.
And Twilight is going full Paladin offscreen.
It didn’t even scorch his cape so it was probably pretty weak.
