Well truth be told, I don’t see it as a means of criticism, more like a means of a selection of references. Not everything has to be a “statement”, after all…
@Background Pony #A8AF
I think it was daring in this case, because Lady Gaga is generally considered more sincere than most pop stars, and to most this puts her above criticism. This episode showed that even the most beloved need a reality check once in a while. That’s why it’s daring.
@YetAnotherBrony
Yes, that’s what I was referring to by implying there was some subtlety to it, going with the character named in a verse rather than the main chorus.
@HyaenusDominae
Bashing celebrities hasn’t been daring for a long time now. It’s completely mainstream, almost expected. It would take more courage to oppose bashing than to cater to it.
@Keith Mowz
I figured. It’s just so weird that I haven’t seen anyone mention it, especially considering the opportunity to rip on that disgraceful Simpsons episode.
FINALLY!!! Someone else who caught the Lady Gaga allegory! Forget our argument for a second. Can we just agree for the moment that this episode was really awesome and daring to criticize such a generally well-loved artist? Way more awesome than that one Simpsons episode that actually had Lady Gaga.
@HyaenusDominae
It’s meant to look disingenuous given who was actually behind it.
Also, considering her nickname was “Rara” and she was a pop star, and her alter ego goes by a formal “first name”, I thought it was a reference to Lady Gaga that didn’t go totally overboard.
Also, I thought “HOOFSIES!” was actually pretty funny with how disingenuous it was, and how they kept with it without going too far with the joke.
Wow, this is pretty interesting
Thank you
In this case, I think it would be correct to call the Countess Coloratura
and from what I understand is a pre-existing shorthand for the musical term
It was Applejack’s nickname for her
colo ra tu ra

Perhaps they were making a broad statement about pop stars in general, and they just used a Lady Gaga allegory as an example.

I’m sorry. What you said just reminded me of this so much.
Because as an adult, I demand that cartoons for children be of the highest quality.
Why does it matter?
“Fernando” is mentioned in the song too.
I felt the same. All things considered, I’m glad they want the marginally more subtle route.
I’m surprised they named the straw Fernando instead of just dropping all the subtlety and going with Alejandro.
I’ve since headcanoned that Countess Coloratura is pretty much pony Lady Gaga, especially after watching this video.

I’m pretty sure the comparison was so painfully blatant that even a good chunk of the target demographic got the reference.
