Celestia represents to the story a status quo and stability that runs entirely counter to the idea behind world-shattering events and high adventure with equally high stakes. It is why she is pretty much sidelined or removed from the equation as early as possible by the storytellers MLP:FIM has engaged in both comics and the show due to how they are simply not interested in portraying the alicorns as beings of strength.

The recurring meta-plot of Twilight Sparkle’s ‘career’ in MLP:FIM has and will always be the absolute worst part of the franchise, because it isn’t the driving factor being pushed actively throughout each season, it’s the capstones that they give two 40 minute slabs of time (20 minutes in season 3) each season to portray something they are literally incapable of properly rendering.. as evident by how Deus Ex Machina and sudden friendship speeches are rushed in with less than 5 minutes to spare.

It’s the unfair lot of this character, emotionally stable, wise, and normally responsible (The responsibility caves whenever the writers can’t move around her, like sending Discord to take on Tirek rather than everyone going at once) and with no personal problems we can glean. If they even look at her twice in season 6 beyond her quest-giver role, I’ll be tremendously surprised.

No, it does not have to be this way. There are means of allowing her to be the hero without taking the spotlight from the Mane 6.

For instance, the Mane 6 could be part of a complicated plan requiring the combined efforts of many, but with the narrative centering around them. Or perhaps, through their actions, they allow Celestia to achieve the victory (e.g. The Crystal Empire,) or she is a major agent in the victory of the Mane 6 (e.g. Return of Harmony, Friendship is Magic.) Or even show her as a well of emotional strength and wisdom, with a lot of insight in to the hearts of all, be they good or evil…She is, at least, hundreds of years old, after all. She should have some additional perspective borne of experience and contemplation.

There are probably many other ways to give her a deep, positive influence on a story without having to make her directly powerful, and thus a liability, while keeping her from seeming impotent as well.

People just want her to be useful. She never seems to do anything on-screen.

Personally, I just want her to have some bit of screentime where she isn’t just setting up Twilight beating the bad guys or making a cameo. She’s clearly not worthless (otherwise Equestria wouldn’t have lasted till NMM came back and Twilight probably wouldn’t idolize her), but we’re never really shown that. It’s either told or implied. I just want some good screentime for her.

Why do people constantly want her to win? She can’t, if she does then the story goes out the window and that’s no fun.
