But not going out often wouldn’t be the same as it is with humans, because we don’t have such thick fur covering us. There’s no reason why they can’t have weird skin colour, but it’s just unlikely especially given what has been shown in the show.

Ponies shouldn’t normally be green, so why can’t they be whatever skin color?

^^ Polar bears don’t have coloured pelts, they get their colours from snow. There is no snow in Equestria. Therefore your argument doesn’t make sense.
