This is G1. Either you’re blind or chances are if you watched a Popeye cartoon, you’d think it’d resemble animation from the ’70s. XD

Yeah. MLP has some really dark implications, and it wouldn’t be right to call this show in its entirety to be about namby pamby ponies.

I agree, and there have been a few G4 episodes that matched G1 levels of darkness. I think the Canterlot Wedding episodes, and the changlings in particular, had that G1 feel to them.

Actually, the season 5 finale seems to be bordering on TV-PG. I mean, we saw Fluttershy get killed in the “Chrysalis” timeline!

Oh, god, Usenet. That’s a name you don’t hear every day; makes me warm and fuzzy. (I wasn’t in fandom then, but did read some stuff trying to explain the continuity. I was confused. Really, really, really confused.)
 
And if you think there are no more cartoons with writing that mature… what was Transformers Prime, hmm? (Aside from everything the movies should have been?)
 
Also, G4 Tirek threatened the entire world. We saw everyone fighting back against him and losing miserably. G1 Tirek had a great deal of presence (it’s hard not to with Victor Caroli’s voice behind you, wish we got to hear him do more villains. He’s way too good to be just “that guy who used to say ‘Previously, on The Transformers’ a really long time ago and does the odd Hot Wheels ad nowadays.”) But he’d last two seconds.

Beast Wars was one of the last cartoons that had mature writing. I remember back in the days, the writers would hang out on the Usenet groups with us, talking stories and sharing scripts. Tons of background stuff in the episodes are references to the Usenet group XD

I would say standards were higher back then. They weren’t afraid to have scary scenes in cartoons back then, these days everything is sunshine and rainbows. Heck, even Tirek was better in G1. In G1 he was a serious threat, mentally and physically. In G4 he was some monkey thing that grew.
