I never liked the idea that we have to give everyone who is in some way different a tragic backstory for it. Why isn’t it okay for Maud to be Maud? Different people are different.

I suppose that’s because Pinkie knows Maud so well, her artwork simply reflected how she knew Maud was feeling. Towards the end of the episode, Pinkie had to point out that Maud was ecstatic.
Oh, she smiles, just not often. Only when she is really, really happy.
In Pinkie’s picture she is smiling and has no cutie mark.
