Maybe it’s magical force field armor? I remember at least one Forgotten Realms novel had a heroine (Alias) with a set of that (though not to this extreme).

I’m really liking this “My Little Fantasy” style of art the artist is doing so far. If Rarity turns out to be a Priest/cleric type, it’s pretty much the kind of party I’d run them as in an RPG. Though I would switch Applejack between ‘Knight’ and ‘monk’, and Rainbow dash between ‘warrior’ and ‘thief’ depending on the RPG…
