Just imagine what can you build with a structural element that is essentially unbreakable and invulnerable to stress.
“Canterlot was built on backs of ponies” can easily become literal and the city itself, given it’s resting on a cantilever that cannot exist with materials that yield.

I’d think “semi-grimdark” would be the appropriate tag, actually.
Head-headcanon: the soul inhabiting the statue makes it indestructible. Head-head-headcanon: there are quite a bit of ponies in the sleep of stone who chose to be petrified in useful poses and now serve as arch keystones, building supports, and the like.

Ahh, but it’s true that Discord wasn’t the only one to experience petrification in the context of the show, don’t forget that Twilight was turned into a statue by the cockatrice and lived to tell the tale! Albeit she seemed a little dazed by the experience. XD
For me it’s really all about context and intent, as at the end of the day it’s all magic- and magic can be whatever its caster intends. ^^
One could argue that Discord is exempt, but to each their own.
I personally despise the nature of petrification, but enjoy it’s aplication. Being as skewed Philosophically as I am, I oft spend too much time thinking of outcomes, so this, for that and my only phobia being one related to memory in a way, terrifies me beyond measue.
But fave for the art and the character, my fallings be forgotten.
