If you’re actually being technical, they’re photons emitted by pixels formed from a liquid-crystal display as the light from either a cold-cathode or LED light source passes through them.
(LED and non-LED monitors work exactly the same way, LCDs make up the actual screen. The difference in an “LED monitor” is that instead of using one or more cold-cathode tubes, it uses LEDs behind or on the edges to illuminate the screen. Screens appear more vibrant and colorful because of the difference between the two lights.)

Well if you wanna be so technical about it, they’re actually just a sh*tload of photons emitted by a few thousand LEDs sitting inside your screen.
