It isn’t so much that the art improved more that the artist completely changed their style, and sadly I find the one from 2015 more appealing over 2016, but that’s just subjective. I’ll also add to what the others have said in that hooves for hands on an anthro don’t make much sense at all :T

I just looked at rest of her drawing on derpi (it’s not much) and it seems like she had a nice solid hard line and style and only the last ones get this over-sweet simple and full of sparkles style. :P Maybe it’s just for this series of drawings? 1000 Light flares and how simple some things look kills it for me. ;/ Only the Rarity piece look a bit better (but no bg on it )

& arm hooves look weird to me.  
That & they usually make me wonder if the artist used them to avoid drawing hands.
 
The only function having hooves instead of hands on your arms serve that I can think of is if all you need your hands for is punching powerfully a bunch.

You’re really in the minority there. Arm hooves when the chest and posture are all human is pretty much a damn fursuit. Makes little to no sense as well given that said arm hooves serve no purpose whatsoever.

Well u know, first - l don`t like anthro character are closer to a pony than man with tits on chest its kinda looks absurd for me.  
Second - as u say, Aj are more realistic in 2015version.  
Third - 2015 Aj have a nice body (⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄).

Now that I will argue about. Honestly, more anthros need to have arm hooves. Hands just look weird to me O_o

I apologize if I sound rude or anything, but I personally think the 2015 version looks better.

The 2015 version is better since the anthro has hands instead of arm hooves (which defeats some of the purpose of both arms & hooves).
 
Other than that it really just comes down to a style preference.

I’m a little on the middle. I do prefer realism, but I also say that several aspects of Lovepuma’s art have gotten better. Now with this one, I will agree with you that the new one is better.

Since I prefer chubby, hour glassed girls. 2016 is better.

Out of curiosity, is there any specific reason you think that the 2015 version is better? Not trying to argue, I’m just curious.
 
For me, it really comes down to the body proportions. While the 2016 version has a better background and I like the face of that version better (the other one is a little too horselike for my liking), plus it has arm hooves, which I love, the 2015 version is more realistic to what I feel Applejack would be, and I like that.

I think the 2015 style was better - nice details and original style. 2016 - nice but less original style, much less details, and that big-boob bimbo feel to it. I know i will get hate for this but that’s what i think.
