They probably like to hoard it and flaunt it to their peers. Perhaps the Dog with the largest diamond or accumulated wealth is the most respected, if not the chosen leader.
 
It might stem from an early tradition for the Dogs to show off their rare finds while digging or mining, and grew grossly into a life goal for thousands of Dogs to dig up the biggest precious materials they can find.
