Possibly an office rumour (I doubt she was “in the trenches” with the layout artists and animators as to hear the real story first hand) or just covering someone’s ass (assuming the story of the Slenderpony guy getting sacked is true).

That’s kind of a moot point, though, isn’t it? It’s not like Derpy was a known character at the time, she was just a nameless background pony.
The conflicting info, however, is whether or not it was a genuine animation error or something an animator put in as a joke because they expected her to be concealed by other ponies, but then some of the other ponies in the scene got moved around and she became visible.

I’m moderately certain I’ve read this entire thing before, but am unable to find it now. Regardless, Derpy being kept crosseyed due to fandom reaction was known since S1, and confirmed by Faust back in 2011.
Was it the same one where Jim Miller interviewed Lauren?
I think the source was at a ponycon panel.
