Oh cmon…its a fantasy creature. Godzilla’s snout for example is shorter/finer (and how I wish adult Spike’s snout looked like) and he doesn’t have any trouble.
There more I look at it the more I get used to the length though, since that’s typical for dragons. I guess what I really can’t get over is how stumpy it is. The other dragons in the show had long but fine snouts. Even if he’s supposed to be a “tougher” kind of dragon with a stronger thicker jaw, it still didn’t need to have so many “bumps”.
I think the snout is longer so the fire breathing mechanism works.
I agree they had to havea balance between badass and comical, but I’m pretty sure it couldn’t have been too hard to come up with a design that managed that and also made him look cooler than your average goofy-faced dragon. Like I said, there’s parts that look good, but mostly the face bothers me.
Through the years after Secret of my Excess came out, and even before that, I’ve seen several fan designs for adult Spike that managed to make him look both cool and cartoony enough to fit the show’s nature. Sighs In the end, I think it would be enough if only his face looked less exagerated. Like I said, a finer, shorter snout would suffice, but I guess that’s just me.
He does look a bit like Elliot–they both have that oversized, goofy looking lower jaw. Adult Spike’s jaws look more like a T-Rex’s, though, so I’ll second the “more menacing”.
meh, looks better than the Flutter-Hulk design, so I ain’t complaining.

I still think it looks pretty badass. I’ve seen a few comparisons to Pete’s Dragon but this one looks a bit more menacing.
It still has to appeal to kids. They probably had to struggle to find a balance between “badass enough to appeal to teen/adult male fanbase” and “goofy & harmless enough to appeal to 3 & up fanbase.”
My biggest issue with this form however, is the face. It…looks weird. And it didn’t even look as exagerated in the actual episode. I wish his adult form had a shorter, less-stumped snout. He’s a main character for crying out loud. Would it have been so hard to give him a cool adult design?
