My step mother wanted to go to a multicultural festival wearing a coolie hat like that (because she wanted to get into the atmosphere of different cultures with good intentions). I advised against it

Ken is indeed Japanese. However, the Chinese and Japanese languages have a fair number of similarities, because at one point in Japanese history, they got a LOT of their language, both written and spoken from their Chinese neighbors. The languages have, of course, diverged since then, but they still share a number of qualities.

Excellent pun, actually. Did laugh out loud. Funny because it’s true, at least for most Chinese accents. The majority of Japanese accents, ironically, don’t use the L sound.

Aren’t those facts?

Why is that racist? It’s a linguistic fact that primary Chinese speakers have a harder time speaking English because of differences in Phonemes, syntax, conjugation, etc. That’s why, for example, primarily Chinese speakers will sometimes say that a thing costs “Five Dollar.” Because, from the viewpoint of the Chinese language, if you already know that there’s five of them, why bother adding an “S” at the end. I have a friend who’s into linguistics, and I dabble a little myself. Interesting the kind of things you learn.

Also, it’s really more profiling than racism. Racism is the belief that one “race” of people is superior to another. Yes that means that you could technically be a racist against yourself. Profiling deals with the belief in or portrayal of a cultural or hereditary stereotype (I.e. All white people are greedy, selfish white-supremacists, all French are either jerky or hopeless romantics (or cowards). Sorry for the rant, but I’m really sick of people throwing around the word “RACISM” either seriously or jokingly.
