Emerald waits until the guard gets the hole big enough for him to pass through, then he dashes out of the treasure box (making sure to pick up the ritual knife before he goes) and makes a break for the new exit between the guard’s swings.
 
Emerald leaps through the hole, scraping himself rather shallowly against the edges of the hole, and falls into a heap onto the other side.
 
The guard gives a cry of alarm and attempts to grab the colt through the hole, but Emerald quickly shuffles away from it.
 
Emerald sees passageways to the north, south, and east… But they are so dark he can’t make heads or tails of what might be in any of them, other than the path to the east being a relatively open cavern compared to the more cramped looking spaces of the north and south. He has to decide soon though, because the guard is banging against the wall more furiously than ever now.
