I’m very familiar with how it looks. Not only am I observant, I have it tattoed on the back of my shoulder. Also, the linked image you provided isn’t the actual correct design, either. It’s very close, but the actual design used in the show has some differences that a lot of people miss.
This one is a similar-style star, and the main color is correct, but it’s still not an exact match, nor is the secondary star the correct color.
I think that’s kind of the point. It’s similar to the original but different enough to distinguish the two. I don’t think SciTwi needs to have the original Twilight’s cutie mark anyway. Seeing as how it represented magic, and as we’ve seen, this world didn’t have magic until Sunset Shimmer brought it in. So I think a similar but not quite the same that makes a reference to science in some way would be really appropriate.

Its still very similar to the origional, just more equal sides, color changed on the smaller sides, stars removed and two of the smaller sides tooken out. Reference
@PonyPon
It’s not. Her regular one is more vertical, with an asymmetrical design. The background star extends out both sides in the middle, and is also asymmetrical.
Finally, it’s missing the other white stars surrounding it. It’s like a 50% similar one. And missing some details.
And to the OP’s description, with absolutely no disrespect to Lauren Faust, she had nothing to do with Equestria Girls and expressed disappointment in it. So I wouldn’t attribute it to her like that.
Thank You.
Ah. I didn’t get your previous comment about it being an atom, since the white background hid it.
That’s pretty clever.

Look At This Made A Atom On The Back On The Star.
