I tend to subscribe to the theory that at the time both Pound and Pumpkin actually knew subconsciously what to do with their latent abilities. The twins are foals, they don’t know better. But, all they can think is things like “I want toy” or “I wanna play”, and they don’t care how it’s done, all they want is that at that moment. There’s no rhyme or reason, just do it. There isn’t any advance thinking or planning. Hence we see the surprises where Pound is strong enough at 1 month old to actually carry a full-grown mare around the house, and Pumpkin was able to levitate (to fly with her brother), go through walls(actually going through a laundry basket makeshift as a cage), and even break open locks (just to get her toys). And then there was the little thing where the twins felt sorry for making their babysitter cry, yet they knew the whole ‘bag of flour’ gag would make her laugh again.
 
Long story short, at times ignorance certainly is bliss. We all put limits on ourselves subconsciously, which makes it a bit of an effort to break through them. If they don’t have that limitation in the first place, the sky’s the limit. Twilight didn’t know that she was gonna have a magical surge that actually hatched a dragon egg, she was a filly. Same thing with Rainbow Dash doing what used to be the impossible with the whole Sonic Rainboom as a filly.

If Pumpkin Cake can self-levitate, teleport and phase through matter at only a month old; what makes Twilight so special? If Pound Cake can fly, hover and carry and drag another pony several times his weight without getting tired at only a month old; what makes Rainbow Dash so special?
 
I always thought the unfathomable skills foals possess was akin to accidental magic in the Harry Potter series. Their latent abilities just spontaneously appear without them being able to control them. Though it does seem that the foals in the show are semi-able to control these abilities. Maybe they’re just born geniuses of their craft? We shall see.

Oh wonderful, the kid was born with the Death Star superlaser built into her forehead.
