It depends on if the asteroid is an air burst or not. I’m talking about actually making it to at least within a few meters of the ground before exploding, and then the final explosion is the few hundred kilotons. I wouldn’t want an asteroid to explode with gigatons though, that would cause way too much death and destructive. I just want a wake up call.

Really?, here i though the asteroid can yield from giga to tera ton of tnt, i mean those that hit russia in 2013 yield at 500 kiloton, while most of the energy wasted when meteor burn in atmosphere.

I have no idea what that means… But hey, I guarantee an asteroid hitting a major city with the yield of a a few hundred kilotons would cause the idiots in congress to wake up and fund NASA more than chum money. They’ll be like, “Make it so this never happens again! People are pissed that we let this happen!” And then NASA would be like, “We need a twenty-fold increase in budget to fund more telescopes to detect asteroids, rockets, scientists, engineers, research into better propulsion methods, ect.” And they will say, “Done! We’ll just start taxing religions to get you the money! The fact religions are able to get away without taxes is bullshit anyways!” Okay, maybe not that last part, but I can dream, right?

I’ll be sure to chuck an asteroid at a major US city to force the government to fund NASA tons more than they are now, so the tragedy will never happen again, kick starting our expansion into space. Sure, this is a horrible thing, but snails crawling progress we are making now is even worse.
