Well as I said, Starlight is basically acting as a replacement Twilight Sparkle, because now that Twilight is a princess the writers seem adverse to the idea of depicting her as too imperfect, so they use Starlight as a placeholder for the things they might otherwise have done with Twilight. They’ve also seemingly subverted a lot of the main cast into mere shadows of their former selves primarily to focus on supporting characters.

Fame and Misfortune was a cringe-worthy episode. I can appreciate a friendly jab at the fans once in a while, but that was an entire episode of the writers basically saying ‘stop criticizing us.’
 

 
Ah, my bad. I mistook the context of a post following mine. Starlight Glimmer isn’t a bad character per say, but all she really is is the writers trying to put Twilight Sparkle, the unicorn, back into the show, because as terrible an idea as Princess Twilight was, just up and turning her back into a unicorn at this point would be seen as a cop-out.

Let’s be fair though, the writers don’t really treat her right to begin with; try and name how many focus episodes she has that DON’T involve her shyness/social anxiety/etc. Yeah, I know that Fame and Misfortune counted that as taking the piss at bad parts of the fandom, but you can’t really deny it.
 
Even then, we aren’t here to talk about Fluttershy, it’s about Starlight Glimmer.

I’m the exact opposite. I didn’t really see anyone upset about the tree but I’d seen some people complain that it was terrible that Discord made Fluttershy cry and that he should have known better and so on.

In ordinary circumstances, but this is different. You see, if anything makes Fluttershy cry, her fans often demand blood. If she is portrayed as anything short of flattering, her fans call the writers hacks. If you say anything about Fluttershy that even suggests she’s not the best thing since sliced bread, you can expect one of her fans to try to call you on it.

It’s not an opinion, it’s an objective fact that Fluttershy is overrated. She gets so much praise from her fans that it’s easy to forget that she’s a cowardly doormat who only very rarely does anything noteworthy other than whimper and act pitiful.
