If memory serves, the rift between the rest of the tauren and the Grimtotem turned nasty in Cataclysm after certain lore happenings. The Horde is actively on the offensive against the Grimtotem in Stonetalon. If I’m remembering the quest right, it treats working with said Grimtotem as an ‘enemy of my enemy’ situation.

The most holy and honest cow you’ll ever find in Mulgore.

Yeah, I don’t really remember much from questing there, though I do remember Magatha in Thousand Needles.

I think even lore-wise, the only thing the Alliance really has against the Tauren is that they’re allied with the orcs. I kinda suspect the Allies don’t really know much about who the Grimtotems are and just went “hey, those black moo moos aren’t getting along with the normal moo moos. Maybe we can make a deal with them?”.
 
Might also be that the Grimtotem leaders in Stonetalon are slightly less suicidally bloodthirsty than those elsewhere. I can’t imagine once Magatha caught wind of that alliance she’d not put an end to it pretty quickly.

You kill an awful lot of Grimtotems to be considered friendly there.

I gotta be honest, the commissioner wanted me to draw them using in game options, and the tauren can’t have blonde hair (at least not in the expansions ive tried)  
But in the end I just sorta gave in to drawing them with the hair colors they have in the series, which is why Celestia and other newer works look more like themselves while others looks less like themselves :’D  
Tried to fix this one by adding a hint of blonde, but it didn’t quite work, might redo the hair at some point haha

Isn’t it funny that that Alliance considers the Horde to be blood thirsty savages, yet they went and made allies with the “worst” of the tauren tribes, the Grimtotems?

idunno, they’re all pretty friendly and peaceful except for the Grimtotems… who oddly enough are friendly with the Alliance in a questline in the Stonetalon Mountains, if I recall correctly.

Friendliest Tauren ever.
