To be fair, it is really impressive magic.  
And you just know that if it was a real MMO, there’d be entire raid-builds based around protecting a caster or two that unload the most powerful Explosion magic they can on a boss.  
Especially for anything other than end-game raiding.

Isn’t a magic missile an energy attack that can strike several adjacent targets at once?  
It can then logically be assumed that if you went to increase the power, you’d end up with collateral damage as well (then again, I’m not exactly into role-playing games, so I could be wrong).
