If it’s a really realistic VR, then it doesn’t feel like a constructed world consisting of 0 and 1.
It feels like a real world then and there’s nothing in it that tells you it isn’t.
But such an indistinguishable simulation definitely takes longer than making a realistic Sweetie Bot with AI that acts like it’s really alive.

At that point we’ll have realistic VR with tactile feedback, and we won’t need a physical Sweetie Bot. I bet that’ll get there before convincing pony robotics.

Give it time. The first step is actually making a functional robot.
And if that project succeeds and they release the core code, there will be other groups trying the same.
Not all of them will make it….. But those who do will bring the development further and there will be better and better Sweetie Bots over time.
I’m guessing with how fast technology advances, we can have a Sweetie Bot with a real, highly developed AI in 20 - 30 years.

unfortunately, this sweetie bot won’t have a personality, and will be only capable of walking, alongside being a convention attraction for everyone to see like a rare animal, or a technological wonder…
