Nice wall. Trump would be proud.
And as a matter of fact, I’d argue that some major events in the show make much more sense when coupled together with the comics. Particularly, events involving Luna.
Now, there was someone on this website that argued that the Nightmare Moon flashback in Princess Twilight Sparkle contradicted the Nightmares arc from the comic in that Nightmares establishes that Nightmare Moon is the result of Luna being taken over by a being that we can safely assume is the leader of the antagonistic group otherwise known as the Nightmare Forces, and her jealousy of Celestia is only a factor leading up to the cause and is not the cause itself. Whereas the show has yet to imply such a thing happening. The supposed “contradiction” came from a lack of indication of involvement from outside forces. But does the lack of indication really contradict Nightmares? No. Nor would I say there’s truly a “lack of indication”. Because for one, there’s Luna’s reaction as her transformation into Nightmare Moon begins in the flashback. If Nightmare Moon’s existence was caused by Luna alone, then why would she be afraid of transforming into Nightmare Moon? Without the comics considered, one could get that she at least never intended to become Nightmare Moon at all. Or, she didn’t know what would happen if she did, and by the time she realized nothing good would happen, she couldn’t stop it from happening. Add the comics into the equation, and Luna’s reaction becomes one of realizing that she made a mistake, and that mistake would bite her hard in the flank. And there’s the matter of the black mist that surrounds her as she’s transforming. The way it manifests itself heavily suggests that it didn’t come from Luna herself; contradicting the idea that only Luna herself was involved in her transformation to Nightmare Moon, as she doesn’t start transforming until that mist engulfs her. So if the comics are ignored, the question of where that black mist comes from remains unanswered. But if the comics are considered, not only is that question answered, but that black mist is identified as well.
And there’s the thing with Luna’s guilt from being Nightmare Moon. I’ve seen at least two people argue that the episode, Do Princesses Dram of Magic, contradicts Nightmares on the basis that “Nightmares doesn’t make sense because Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep centers on Luna’s guilt from being Nightmare Moon; something she shouldn’t have if she wasn’t in control of herself as Nightmare Moon”. But to that, I say “that notion couldn’t be any more false”. Because for one thing, and I think it’s primarily because of the target demographic, the show doesn’t show Nightmare Moon as the villain she is very often. Princess Sparkle shows that Nightmare Moon was contained before she could do any considerable damage beyond laying waste to the Castle of the Two Sisters. (And had Nightmare Moon won against Celestia during when that flashback takes place, the furthest extent of the damage would be, according to Word of God, the end of the world.) And in The Cutie Re-Mark, she doesn’t perform any acts associated with villainy. Without the comics, one has to wonder just what did Luna do as Nightmare Moon that caused her so much grief. But in the comics, specifically in FIENDship is Magic, it’s shown that Nightmare Moon enslaved a race of dream-watching moon creatures (who share their race’s name with a certain Alicorn OC) in an attempt to turn Equestria’s citizens against Celestia. And her Plan B was to get Celestia to reduce her sentence. Both plans failed. And she decided to wait the sentence out by given Equestria’s citizens nightmares in the meantime. (Giving rise to the Equestrian holiday, Nightmare Night.) So even though Luna didn’t have control over her actions as Nightmare Moon, the fact that she let those very actions happen in the first place is cause enough to regret those actions.
TL;DR: The show has apects that mesh very well with the comics. No matter how much haters want to deny it and say otherwise.
Not to mention here’s this piece from other than Lauren Faust:
Same for that, I mean it doesn’t affect show greatly. I’m talking about big things not small details. Granted Babs is pretty big, but again there isn’t anything in the comics that will prevent someone from understanding the show. So that’s where I’m getting at, in generally the comics are not tightly coupled with the show.
If you don’t read the comics, all of those could simply be just ignored. It’s not tightly coupled.
The chapter books yes, but the comics are not really referenced within the show. Give me one example where the show references anything from the comics and I will believe. As for EQG, yes I believe that is canon.
It’s very possible, and vastly preferable, to make a show aimed at kids while still entertaining for their parents without catering directly to the vocal brony crowd.
And Wander Over Yonder‘s ratings were good enough to merit renewal, and the network in fact wanted to renew it, but the bosses of the bosses of the network honchos decided the show no longer fit in Disney’s plans. It’s certainly possible they would have reconsidered if WOY had the fanbase of Gravity Falls, but it’s not a given.
@xargos32
Remember, bronies are pretty much like any other large collection of people on the internet. And on the internet, it’s standard operating procedure to assume the worst of anyone who says something you don’t like.
But yeah…at least he’s honest. That’s literally the only good thing about this.
And before someone accuses me of pulling this out of my butt:
The only voice of Hasbro belonged to McCarthy and at convention she made clear that they do not affect the show.
I dont remember WoY having a problem with fans constantly shatting on them on Twitter perhaps it’s because they kept an healthy distance between them and the fandom ? Just a thought
His first few episodes were so good, I kind of hope they demote him back to smaller projects like he started off doing.
If not for those “nerds” MLP would have been as popular as WOnder over Yonder and die out after first season. It’s those nerds who made it into a popular phenomenon and the show relevant. A writer who decided that the show is now JUST for KIDS is the oone being wrong here as Lauren always wanted that series to appeal to the adults, too.
That was the error from day one and i’ll keep repeating it until i’m blue on the face that acknowledging a fanbase of dour-faced nerds,cynical millenials and hipster “fan of the fandoms” will only bring them trouble.They should have stick it to “only for kids” and totally IGNORE this fandom in name only
Oh and of course people take offense that a guy sound winded and cynical after being constantly shat on on Twitter.This fandom is so entitled that they expect the staff to bend over and smile at people who despise them and constantly tell them how shitty they are.If that was me,i would have already taken the Ian Maxtone Graham route and said “That’s why they’re on the Internet and we’re writing the show”
I told Jim many times that Hasbro should have additional Story Editor who would work with IDW and Berrow to correct everything into one story canon. But since Bobby Curnow act as the only editor and he don’t even watch the show, IDW comics have very different characters and wierder stories going on in them. Hasbro just doesn’t care either and say that it isn’t canon if it isn’t on the show so they don’t have to watch for contradictions and they don’t have to waste time reading comics and books when they can write episodes.
@TheBrianJ
This is what I’m hoping for, and the season opener was pretty good, with the alicorn stuff not a major enough continuity tweak to bother me. I guess time will tell if he’s just joking around, or if he really doesn’t care about established continuity.
@Background Pony #A522
If you’re talking about a freelance writer who’s just writing a few episodes, I’d agree. But considering the Story Editor is in charge of overall consistency and continuity of the show, I don’t think expecting him to be familiar with the existing continuity and worldbuilding is too much to ask.
@Zahnrad
You’re one of the fans that can’t accept Pumpkin and Pound Cake being the children of Carrot and Cup Cake, aren’t you?
@Pepsi_Al
…We’re doomed.
That’s not his job, he’s already busy enough
