You can blame DiC for that. The Viz redub is much more faithful to the Japanese version, as it is uncensored.
Zoisite has always been a guy. It was simply the DiC dub that made him female, which was one of the most infamous changes in the first dub. The redub has him as a male, as he is in the manga.

If Kunzite is here, where is his lover Zoisite? He’s not here! You can’t have Kunzite without Zoisite.
