Don’t forget that Babs became a BARBer. Barbara -> barber.
I’m aware of that (I’m not implying it either), but you perfectly explained the reason as of why those names (like Lyra) can get away.
So what you said also works with almost all the other examples @cheezedoodle gave.
Edited
I should say have no problem with human names for ponies, I was just pointing out how using Lyra as an argument for it is not going to work as she is named for the very thing that is her cutie mark and how that is where the human name is also from.
@OneOverTwo
Joe = Coffee.
Charity = Literally that, Charity.
Maud = Gray plaid Cloak.
Babs = In this case, it’s not a diminutive from “Barbara”. It’s a slang for “cool girl” or “dear girl”
Basically, what @Prof.NightJack already said.
There’s no salvation for “Suri Polomare”, though. Such a terrible name that was obviously slapped into her to point out the joke that she’s from upper class and LOL!POLO. But well, it’s Polsky. In any case Suri is officially Buttonbelle, anyway.
Edited
Don’t forget Babs Seed in this situation.
Joe
Charity Kindheart
Maud Pie
Suri Polomare
Not really fair to discount names just because they have a translation or definition either. Most names have an archaic definition.
That said, I still prefer Copper Top for its double meaning.
About this I think I have to comment something.
People that name ponies with human names, or if they do it for the sake of a reference are missing the point here. Pony names are meant to be kept simple. They are usually after things, attributes, characteristics or functions. that has always been like that ever since the first generation.
G1: Medley, Sweet Heart, Glory, Moondancer
G2: Clever Clover, Ivy, Sky Skimmer, Elegant
G3: Minty, Pinke Pie, Silver Song, Tea Leaf
And so on.
Some pony/horse puns/onomatopoeia can be given a pass sometimes, like Globe Trotter or Tender Nuzzles, but in the case of these unnamed background ponies in the show, when people come in with names like “Judy Trots”, the pony stops being a pony and becomes just a reference. Mind you, I’m saying this as someone that enjoyed Zootopia.
That said, that doesn’t mean we can’t come up with names that might reference something. In my opinion, Time Turner is a better name than Dr.Whooves.
This.
I was about to say the same thing.
Not really a good example, the name comes from the constellation and that get’s it’s name from the instrument lyre.
So the pony isn’t giving a human name as much as she’s named for somthing non-human that humans also use as a name.
Edited
There’s nothing wrong with a pony having a human first name. Lyra is a good example.
“Miranda” has a bit of the same problem “Judy” does in that they are both human names. “Miranda Rights” comes from Ernesto Arturo Miranda, whose 5th and 6th amendment rights were violated.
Hey, you’re right! I see the resemblance now.
I saw Miranda Rights too, I like that one and copper top are the only real options, imo.
plus if she’s copper top then you could say she’s realated to carrot top
Edited
It’s bad, but not as bad when it can pass as a pony name.
Judy Clopps is too tryhard.
Copper Top is a pretty good name (I like it better than Hot Fuzz, which as has been pointed out, is also a pretty blatant reference). I was also partial to Miranda Right, which I swear I saw someone had suggested at one point, but I guess that one never caught on.
But “Hot fuzz” is just as bad as far as being a blatant reference goes
>Normal Human name
>Flavor of the month reference (in this case, another character with almost next to nothing in common)
>having Clop/Trot/Hooves or any other variant in them
C´mon, Square, you can’t really think that’s better than Hot Fuzz, Cement Shoes, Punisher or even Copper Top.
I think “Judy Clopps” is better X3
yeah haha. everything you know is gonna change after the movie. the trailers don’t do it justice!
pony with handcuffs is still cuter, though!
Maybe it’s her personality in the movie making you like her more? I have yet to see it, so I’ll withhold my final judgement until then.
Welp, there`s always that somebody
To me, Judy is both irresistibly adorable and the coolest damn woman to emerge in a movie in years!
I don’t find the bunny that cute.
Hnnnng, that image
