If I gave just one example, it might make understanding my point harder.  
I generally don’t have great confidence in my ability to make others understand me, so using a few more examples is generally useful.  
Besides, from what I can see, there’s a whole two examples, and I’m not seeing anyone else telling you the same thing <.<

I remember shortly before the CMC got their marks, they had different ones featured in some merch’. (Granted said marks weren’t on their flanks.)

Yeah, but it felt heavily enough implied that I’m considering it canon.  
We don’t know for certain that Shining Armor had sex with Cadence, but I’m considering it canon given how they had a child.  
We don’t know for certain that the goat-demon-thing that stole the goblet actually died when it fell down, but the skull near the goblet kind of implies it.  
In other words, sometimes they don’t say it outright, but if it’s heavily enough implied it really is just about the same as saying it.
 
I mean, yeah, if they wanted to change the cutie mark they do have room to say ‘oh, no, that wasn’t it’  
But I’d consider that ‘subtle’ ret-conning, as in it used to be canon that it was one mark, then the creators changed their minds.

That’s what many fans believe. But we’ll probably never find out, considering we might never see Babs again, unless they can get a new voice for her.

Eh, it seems pretty likely the apple-scissors on the letter was meant to be a drawing of Babs’ mark, given she’s in the Apple family and her cutie mark is scissors.
