Kirby 64 was one that did and was excellent.
Depends, actually. Some (i.e. very few) Nintendo 64 games actually use the D-pad. And you can’t actually access the d-pad easily at all when you hold it by the middle handle.

Yup. Though you still have to make sure that various idiots and dumbasses also take off their shoes at proper place, and also that they don’t step there in their slippers, carrying outside-dirt all over the house and refusing to clean their fucking things and stop stepping there.

Heck no. I don’t wear shoes in anyone’s house, typically. Unless I’m about to leave the house, I don’t even wear socks when I’m at my own house. Especially in that sort of scenario I would DEFINITELY not want to be wearing shoes, because its way easier to wash my feet than to wash shoes.

Because I have six pets and two of them are not reliably housetrained. Better my shoes get dirty than my bare feet.
