Was going to color this but decided that could be done another day.

Mmmaybe. I’ve actually always had no desire to get it with any gender way before FiM. The human body is grody, and I guess I like fictitious drawings of the human body more. In fact, there’s only three things I hate about reality: The laws of time, the laws of sound, and the human body. :T
I wonder if some clandescent organization is taking notes right now,collecting data for some talk show or conspiracy site. Eventually Coming to the conclusion That My Little pony is causing the human species to lose interest in reproducing with other humans in favor of multicolored horses.
@LuminoZero
Exactly right. Spike’s initial crush was based solely on Rarity’s looks. @CogWeaver
I believe you make a good point about folks being annoyed at the one-sided crushing because it’s too close to home at times. I’ve known guys who behaved like Spike, not a single one of them managed to get the girl they pined after.
@CogWeaver
You somehow managed to put it into words. Honestly I like it better this way, Spike doesn’t seem to be acting too affectionate towards Rarity anymore, but they do seem to be acting more like friends now.
Did you ever have to make up your mind?
You pick up on one and leave the other one behind
It’s not often easy and not often kind
Did you ever have to make up your mind?
Did you ever have to finally decide?
And say yes to one and let the other one ride
There’s so many changes and tears you must hide
Did you ever have to finally decide?
@Jayswing103
Well how come he sleeps with a Rarity doll, Spike going back for her in Scare Master, and of course his overall worrying for her in the season five finale.
@LuminoZero
I think where the grievance some people might have here comes in is where they see this exact demonstration of beautiful love that you described in Spike, but Rarity’s half of the relationship feels to be lacking. And what you described is designed to be one-sided, all that one person can do; but what people want - what shippers want - is to see this wonderful type of love being expressed from both sides of the relationship, not just one person pining and the other not giving a damn (they get enough of that in real life already).
Even more subdued and casual, Spike is still pumping out every little bit of affection he can muster for Rarity. Everything he does for himself or others, it’s ultimately all for Rarity: checking his muscles and strength in the mirror, keeping himself as being a humble and nice dragon, helping Rarity out with whatever she needs done, one can easily argue that it’s all ultimately for her.
And that’s wonderful… except for the fact that Rarity doesn’t seem to be reciprocating anything. We don’t see her going out of her way to do things for Spike’s sake, even in the least degree. I guess we do see her start to take greater and greater responsibility for “getting down and dirty” in doing what needs to be done, like making her business put out branches or not flinching at getting covered in dirt, but it can’t easily be said that the ultimate reason she does those things are for Spike at all, it’s just her pursuing her own desires and ideas. Gauntlet of Fire here did have a good opener where she and Spike were mining up jems together (a stark difference than the Diamond Dogs episode where Spike was digging and Rarity was just telling him where to dig) so there may be hope yet for this ship and those that ship it (myself included). But then it could also just turn into a nice, simple friendship, Spike’s lust dying as it tries to reach for something deeper but can’t because Rarity’s affections never go past simple friendliness. It’s hard to say at this point, which is kind of worrisome since we’ve already gone through 5 seasons and yet somehow haven’t gotten anywhere with this in that time.
But so whichever way it goes, it’s understandable that people have been feeling fairly frustrated that, arguably the show’s primary ship, the one they established was going to be a thing from the very first episode, isn’t modeling the kind of love that people want to see - especially in a show about friendship, love, harmony, and doing all of those good things right for once.
People like to think that lust and love are as different as night and day. Lust is evil, love is good, etc etc.
The truth is that they are both needed for a successful relationship. Lust is what can lead to love. Lust is the physical attraction, the moment of interest. Sure, physical attraction is not the most important thing to a relationship, but you’re fooling yourself if you think it isn’t important at all. In many ways, lust is what draws us closer to someone so we can learn more about them, bond with them, and that can lead to love, or not as the case may be.
But, in fact, many relationships start off through lust. The concept of Love at first sight is Lust at first sight. So, yes, Spike’s first meeting with Rarity was based purely on lust. As he got closer to her and began to bond with her, the lust became less prominent, replaced by a more subdued and normal attraction.
You see it in real life. Observe the difference between a couple that has been together for two weeks and one that has been for two years.
Thanks, yo. ^w^
That would be the Kinsey Scale
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinsey_scale
I’d ask around whether there exists a clinically recorded spectrum of orientation if I cared. XD
Yup. Though in my case I know why and I know that I’m “supposed” to be straight IRL because girls are less “not attractive” than boys to me.
@thps48
Also yup. Ponies/anthros/well-drawn humans? Sign me in, regardless of their sex. IRL? Yuck.
I would happily support this conspiracy theory :3
DIO get out of this guy’s mind

Isn’t that the one thing they have been doing since this fandom began in 2010
Wouldn’t that be something.

This is me as well. I don’t see many other humans that attract me.
Humans. Not attractive. Know not why. Because of this, I’ve actually trouble knowing whether I’m gay, bi, a, or just straight. ^3^
Same. Or well, I wouldn’t say I’m uninterested in romance, but…
Believe it or not, I actually haven’t. Never really became interested in romance, at least personally.
I think every straight guy has been in Spike’s place at one point. It’s a part of growing up.
Exactly right. Spike’s initial crush was based solely on Rarity’s looks.

Seems to be that Spike wants to keep himself relevant to Rarity without actually making a move on her.
That’s why Rarity doesn’t necessarily see it as a romantic gesture but rather just a friend being loyal.
You somehow managed to put it into words. Honestly I like it better this way, Spike doesn’t seem to be acting too affectionate towards Rarity anymore, but they do seem to be acting more like friends now.

I don’t like looking at other couples
Yes, and?

That’s infatuation.
