I often suspect that large chunks of the fandom have no idea what the word “canon” actually means.

It is canon to the show but the show is not canon to the movies. So no its not canon.

No they said it was canon, but it won’t ever affect the show so Sunset’s never gonna show up.

They have said about 1000 times that Equestria girls is not canon and sunset will never appear outside of the films and comics.

It was obvious from the summary that it wasn’t Sunset. Twilight’s got no problems with Sunset.

Trixie. Sunset Shimmer is too busy with Equestria Girls movies.

And then it turns out to be Luna

I personally would say that just about any character that has not explicitly stated to be not-a-pony, could be a pony. Just like how Spike considers himself to be a honorary pony or some such.

Also keep in mind MLP uses “pony” as “person”; chances are it’s Discord, especially given we already know he’ll be in 2 or 3 episodes this season.

Why would it even be Trixie? She’s reformed now, right? She said sorry. Twilight was all “you’ll learn” and stuff and then she got stuffed on a bus.
 
Actually, I really can’t think of anyone who would make sense here except Tirek. What could possibly make Twilight object to Starlight making friends? Either she thinks Starlight is relapsing, or it’s because the ‘former bad pony’ is absolutely unforgiveable. I mean, what else could it honestly be?
 
It’s not like it’d be Lightning Dust or something.
