She really is the pony version of this guy
Yes. As Starlight herself said, she never moved on from that one insult when she was small. She’s like a vicious bully given true power and delusional enough to justify anything she does to make others small so she can feel big and important.
And the 1984 style torture in the Equal Village.
Starlight says “2+2=5, 6, or whatever the party, I mean, I says it does.”
Now that I think about it, that was Starlight’s goal with the time travel thing too wasn’t. She was trying to use the spell to prove that Twilight & Co. Weren’t special, or important. and was trying to break Twilight’s will.
” A true victory is to make your enemy realize they were wrong to oppose you in the first place; to force them to acknowledge your greatness!” -Gul Dukat
What a monster!
No, really, if you think DT deserves hatred, you are probably a horrible person.
I said it before, I’ll say it again: it’s all good dude. Answer at your own pace, heck you don’t even need to answer at all if you’re not up to it at the time or whatever.
To be honest, I forget we had this conversation until now.
Sorry I didn’t reply to this sooner, but I’ve been studying for my finals these past two days. I’ll try and keep it short, since I need to go to bed soon.
I think it’s more a matter of perception for me than anything tangible. I think it’s going to take a lot more than a friendship montage for me to see her as anything more than somepony who undeservingly got let off the hook because Twilight felt sorry for her.
@Jarkes
You mean Sunset, right?
Well that’s bad given, no even is even really talking about that right now.
Edited
I actually like Starlight (I agree with most of ColdhardSilver’s points) and even I think this comparison is full of crap.
Silver here, posting anon because reasons. Hope you don’t mind
“I think this scene was the one that convinced me the…”
“Actions speak louder than words. Starlight might say she’s remorseful, but her actions don’t show it, IMHO.”
>I greatly disagree considering the context of the scene. Yes she’s talking about herself and her personal turmoil; wasn’t that the point of the scene? The parallel between her and Sunburst? The personal turmoil both had preventing both from the going on with the subject at hand? Through such the two can establish some common ground to which they can recuperate; as hinted by Spike reading Twilight’s list just replacing humiliating with…well actually they’re both kinda humiliating in a sense. I also have to disagree with the “only pony…” statement since, again via the context, the only reason Starlight is in that scene (as in physically in that house) was to contract Sunburst (despite of her personal hang-ups) to help save the Empire, even snapping at him for so obviously avoiding the call for help, or at that least make sure the NEET doesn’t freeze to death.
So overall, I think the comparison you made between Sunset and Star is off base.
I think this scene was the one that convinced me the only pony she felt sorry for was herself. Her biggest concern was not the fact she hurt other ponies, but that other ponies might think ill of her because of what she did.
@ColdhardSilver

@ColdhardSilver
Think of it this way: Sunset is postwar Germany, while Starlight is postwar Japan. Germany has taken full responsibility for its actions and doesn’t try to use its own wartime experience as an excuse or as a way to somehow diminish its own crimes; Japan, on the other hand, refuses to take full responsibility for its past and only ever talks in-depth about the Second World War when it pertains to how Japan suffered during the war. The difference between the German and Japanese mentality towards discussing the war can best be summed up as:
Germany: We committed war crimes and there is nothing that can justify our behavior during the war.
Japan: Sure, we might have committed war crimes in China and Southeast Asia, but we suffered too!
Likewise, the difference between Sunset and Starlight can best be summed up as:
Sunset: Yes, I did terrible things and there is nothing that can excuse my actions.
Starlight: Sure, I did some bad things, but you don’t know what I went through!
op is a duck, op is trying to start shit, and drama.
are you really comparing a spoiled brat with the pony version of jim jones?
Fair warning, I’m asking this to understand your reasoning. I’m a firm believer of analyzing things (in this context anyway) via the “every part of the buffalo” method; in other words you disregarding certain parts for reasons is a-ok, but I’ll never do it.
Aside from those two lines, it seemed less like remorse and more like self-pity to me.
She wasn’t?
Starlight Glimmer: [gulps, exhales] I know there’s no excuse for what I did, but I want you all to know that I’m ready for whatever punishment you think is fair.
Let’s not forget that in Crystalling the main reason she didn’t tell Twilight about her hangups was because she didn’t want to seem ungraceful to Twilight and not taking this redemption thing seriously:
Spike: …You should talk to Twilight about it. I’m sure she’d want to hear what you have to say.
Starlight Glimmer: I know. But I don’t want her to think I’m not ready to learn or that I’m not grateful for everything she’s doing.
also:
Starlight Glimmer: [to Sunburst]…Let’s just say I know what it’s like to have something you’re not exactly proud of.
What Starlight feared others may think of her is a part of it, but I wouldn’t call it the only thing nor the major point.
