There are some violinists who will intentionally notch their strings so that in the middle of a performance, a string will snap. They can play around it by switching to a lower string and playing it an octave higher. It’s just to make it more intense/impressive/showy because it’s obviously pretty hard and intense to do in the middle of a crazy fast song, especially when you have to account for multiple strings snapping on-the-fly.
 
And some will finish with a single string left…
