That’s possible, I suppose.  
I like to think that AJ’s mom was an Orange, and that AJ’s full name is Jacqueline Apple, which was shortened to Applejack.  
(I got the idea from somewhere that Jacqueline is a type of orange, but I’m having trouble tracking down proof.)

Technically, Applejack is half Orange (her aunt and uncle are Oranges, so one of her parents was too).  
Must be fun being a one-pony family feud.

A waste of biomatter
As a person who until recently avoided eating oranges from an irrational dislike of them I must say…cut up oranges are more fun to eat than apples. With apples you just bite down but with oranges you can pull the juicy meat out with your teeth like a predator of citrus…also, from experance I learned oranges don’t turn brown in the open air if you leave them out for a while.
 
Oranges:1 apples: a digit less than one.
