“I could have met her, if I were in the same canon.”
@Ciaran
Thanks for elaborating on the delicate path these two walk.
@MegaAnimationFan
Exactly. Starlight might have even more in common with Sunset, but they haven’t met.
Also, taking off the shipping tags, because nothing from the quote or screencap that blatantly shows it.
They appreciate their mutual understanding while walking side by side and looking at each other.
First pony she’s met.
^ All of this.
Well, that’s kind of what makes them interesting - they’re flawed characters with someplace to grow. I’m glad that the writers are giving both of them the same opportunity that Sunset had in Rainbow Rocks to process their regret, and figure out why living a different way might be worth the pain.
I think she’s being written as if she is sincere, but she just has absolutely no clue what it means. She WANTS to have been humble and apologetic, but she doesn’t know how to actually do the work to make that real. So, when Starlight abandons Trixie (confirming Trixie’s own worse feelings about herself) she has only one option: go through with the trick she promised to do and then go down in history as the pony who gave it her all but - in the end - failed exactly the way she always knew she would.
Trixie’s is humble and apologetic, but she approaches it with the same over-the-top mania of everything else in her life: try so hard that you can’t help but fail, and then know that it’s just another validation of your own self-loathing.
For me, I think Trixie’s being written very well. She just has no clue how to be what she wants to be.
And, even if she ever was, she’d feel that she had been a complete failure at it.
I’m not saying that the writers are putting out MacBeth here, but they might be putting out Gilgamesh.
(you’re only as great as your sources are obscure)
Totally. The show has the problem that if it too accurately portrays these two utter and complete assholes as the complete and utter assholes that they are, then basically they’ve got a show with two assholes as the main character that no one can stand to watch.
For me? It works.
But I can totally get that it is not working for others.
How is that lying to themselves?
When Starlight refers to her past she’s either:
A) Speaking about it where it would affect her current life hence her stress while trying to make friends in ponyville or to reunite with Sunburst. And from things like her rants in Re-mark and her panic attacks in both Crystalling and NSP, I don’t think it’s an easy thing for her to let go.
B) Joking about it in an awkward manner in a way that also is meant to mock herself.
As for being manipulative, like Starlight said in this episode during the Big Mac scene, that’s kinda who she is. Girl’s got a smooth silver tongue and uses it; and in that same scene she owns up to it.
As for our blue friend, I believe that the same applies to her. She let her ego get the best of her, tis her weakness, so to speak. That’s not rooted in her past as much as it is who she is.
“Manipulative cunt”? Can you give some examples?
And Trixie’s apologetic about the whole enslaving and tormenting Ponyville thing, which is kind of on a very different level than being obnoxious.
They are social outcasts who regret their pasts and hope to change themselves for the better.
But at the same time, they don’t want to let go of their pride and self-reliance.
They can comfortably communicate together without fear of being shunned or shamed.
Edited
Neither of them want to let their past go. Starlight is still a manipulative cunt and she brings up her past, unprovoked, every time she’s on screen. She’s like someone on Tumblr who won’t shut up about their self-diagnosed PTSD. And Trixie is still obsessed about being better than everyone else, the Humble and Apologetic thing is a lie.
I understand that this is a thing they have in common, and that’s more than enough to get the ship sailing. It’s just not an attractive ship, imo.
