that’s exactly my point. nobody calls out any artist for changing twilight’s defining feature of being female, or rainbow dash’s defining trait of being a quadruped, or spike’s defining trait of being a dragon, or pinkie pie’s defining trait of being slim, or applejack’s defining trait of having one regular tongue and a pony’s tail, or rarity’s defining trait of not being a snake, or fluttershy’s defining trait of being worst pony, or starlight glimmer’s defining trait of being a mary sue. the short of it is, is when people say “it’s wrong to change a character’s trait” like artists are an assembly line that’s obligated to only pump out hasbro’s hideous but approved stock vectors, i say “artistic interpretation / creativity / freedom says what” and would like to see artists enjoying themselves while they engage in a hobby.
 
especially when vinyl scratch’s eyes are red in an admittedly non-canon but still official product.

i’m just getting at how silly it is to only some of the time call out an artist for what is very clearly a design choice and/or preference.

You can make any character an anthro/human/different gender and it’d still be that character in essence, but change an aspect of what makes the character unique - like hair colour, eye colour, cutie mark, personality, and suddenly you have an ORIGINAL OC DO NOT STEAL

i always find it funny how people complain when an artist gives a character a different eye color, but never when they make them anthro, a human, a different species, a different gender…

It was sort of a community effort, but if I had to take a guess, early Swaetshrit was probably a big influence.

I’d love to know who got the brilliant idea that her eye color would be red anyway. It doesn’t match her character at all, whatsoever.

It’s not just one person that likes the red though. It’s a huge chunk of people who have been around since the start and then some. There was no accurate for like 1/3rd of the series, which was long enough for red to be established as a norm. People latched onto the idea very early on, and red eyed Vinyl will always hold a place in people’s hearts even after the official color was revealed. The same goes for a lot of pony names, like Minuette = Colgate, or Sweetie Drops = Bon Bon (though episode 100 worked that one into canon). It might seem silly, but people really got attached to the red. It was one of her most striking features. I wouldn’t consider giving her red eyes any weirder than drawing the CMC blank flanked after they got their cutie marks. It’s simply an earlier incarnation.

This isn’t about what someone likes. You might as well draw an OC if you’re not going to depict a canon character the way they are meant to be depicted.
